A beta version is something that has not yet been fully tested and might not work properly.

Yes, there is a fee. You might want to hold off, there will be a 2005 version soon, or so I'm told (we're running out of 2005 days aren't we). What functions do you need that you don't have? Just curious.
BTW, if 2005 version is released, I'll sell you my 2003 version.

uhh.. no. K, there are multiple DVD's... and the license needs to accompany the program... and then there's the matter of compensation. LOL!
You didn't say which Office programs you were using (except for Excel), but look at the FILE | SAVEAS command. It will fix your problem.
e.g., in Word, choose Save As Type: Word 97-2003. Then, OK.
e.g., in Excel, choose Save As Type: Excel 97-2003. Then, OK.
e.g., in Access, choose Backup Database... the default is Access 2000 format. Nothing else needed.

It is currently called Office 12.
I am not sure if they will label it with a year upon release or not, but 12 is what Microsoft seems to be referencing it is.
It is in beta stage right now.

Forbes wrote:Microsoft Shares Could See 15% Upside To Market
David Ng, 12.08.05, 11:16 AM ET
SG Cowen reiterated a positive investment opinion on Microsoft (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people ), citing increased confidence in the company's revenue acceleration in fiscal 2006 and 2007.
"We see upside relative to the market of 15% or more over the next six to 12 months," SG Cowen analyst Drew Brosseau wrote in a note to investors.
The research firm said Microsoft's revenue is poised to accelerate starting in the December quarter on the back of two key product cycles, the Xbox 360 and SQL Server 2005.
"Along with these big cycles, Microsoft is finding incremental opportunity in major franchises like client and server platforms through finer market segmentation," the research firm said.
Longer term, Microsoft's Windows Vista and Office 12 remain "on track" for delivery in the second half of calendar 2006, according to the research firm.
SG Cowen added that Microsoft could be developing a branded competitor to the Apple Computer (nasdaq: AAPL - news - people ) iPod.

I have a beta of Windows Vista running on my computer. It is pretty neat.
I'm excited to see the release version.
I'll have to start saving up to be able to get that and Office 12....
