Hello:
Just curious if anyone has tried to install an older version of MetaStock in Windows 8. I am installing MetaStock 9 on my Windows 8 laptop. Everything seems to be working fine, except that an error message keeps popping up. Whenever I open a chart located on my hard-drive, I get this message: "Unable to open file". I click "Cancel". Error message goes away and the chart opens up fine.
I have a subscription to Reuters DataLink. When I open a chart online, there is no error message. Is this related to the whole "local data access / 3rd party data" thing? Again, I can still access charts on my hard-drive. I just want to know if there is a way to stop the error message from showing?
Thanks.

Check the local chart doesn't have a "bad" indicator or something applied/attached... consider deleting all of the contents of the MSSmart folders under your data directories, this will force a reapplication of the saved default template the next time you open those charts, but, you will lose any line studies or notes you have made on those charts.

Hi Tony, [:)]
I knew that MS v9 cannot be installed on Windows 7. Now you gave me great news: it seems Windows 8 is more generous than 7. [:D] Good to know.

Hi Tony and anyone else interested in older versions of MetaStock under Windows 8, I have just installed MetaStock Version 9 under Windows 8.1 and it runs fine. It loaded without any problems - no queries, error messages or hiccups of any type. It opened straight up with the sample stocks provided with the program but I had some trouble with my own stock files - possibly because they came from a backup file - anyway I recreated the stock files I was interested in, applied my old template, and everything now fires up fine. I am using free EOD data for Australian shares from an on-line broker Commsec - no added subscription cost.

You mentioned "when I open a chart online" so are you trying to open those charts while offline when you receive the error?
It is possible that there is a secondary security reference in the chart (i.e. Insert-->Securty) or a formula that uses the Security("Online") function, or a Relative Strength Comparative that is comparing the base security to an "online" security.
If you open the chart while online, you can use the (TAB) key to cycle through all the items in your chart. The highlighted item will show in the lower left corner of the MetaStock status bar, so you can keep pressing (TAB) to view all the different items that are in the chart. This might help in identifying whatever is triggering the error.
