I've got a new laptop running Vista and want to copy my 'Favorites' list to it from another pc running XP. Is there another file I need to copy apart from favorites.dta, as it doesn't appear to be appearing on my laptop. Thanks for any help!

That is the only file. However, sometimes Vista does not like it if you try and save a file directly into the Program Files area. If you are running Vista, try copying the file to your Desktop first, then right-click on the file and choose Copy. Browse through Start-->Computer-->C:-->Program Files (x86 if on 64-bit) -->Equis-->MetaStock and then right-click and paste the file into this folder. Choose Copy and Replace if prompted.

Thanks for that, tried that but it just keeps showing the original Favorites, rather than the one I've copied across. I even tried copying the entire Metastock folder across, but it STILL shows the same empty Favorites group. Presumably it must be keeping the Favorites data in a different location? I didn't have this problem with XP to XP btw. Thanks for your help!

If the other computer is Vista, you may want to try disabling UAC (User Account Control) and then copying the file again. You may also want to double check the file size after moving it into the folder, or possibly performing a search for Favorites.dta. You may have to perform a Non-Indexed search to truly search the entire drive (which takes some time to complete on Vista). Thanks Justin, worked straight away when I disabled UAC; I've only had Vista a short time and I can already see why people hate it so much; I have no idea why the old file should continue to function after I had deleted it and put the new favorites.dta in it's place. That problem alone almost had me 'downgrading' to XP (which I may do anyway as I gather Vista is a memory hog.) Thanks again! :)

Vista has this odd feature called the "Virtual Store" where it seems to intercept the file that would normally go where you're trying to put it. Typically when this happens, you will see a "button" of sorts appear at the top of the folder view of that directory called "Compatibility Files". When you click on this you can see what has been intercepted from being put into the folder.
In any event, it can be very confusing when it happens because it acts like it is successfully doing what you want even though it's really not.

Hi, I've encountered exactly the same problem in Windows 7 with Metastock 9.1 EOD. Normally, in XP, after adding charts to favorites in Metastock, one can find favorites.dta created in c:\program files\equis\metastock\ upon exiting the program. But this is not the case in Windows 7; the favorites.dta cannot be found at all.
Any suggestion apart from using higher version of the program?

Hi, I've resolved the problem by copying the favorites.dta to
c:\Users\username\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Equis\Metastock
instead of copying to
c:\Program Files\Equis\Metastock
Somehow, unlike in XP, the program seemed to update and keep the favorites.dta there in W7.

Hi
I have tried the method, but my favourites still show historical data.
In additional, it also show some stock ticker symbol change to 'unknown item'
Removing and replacing with old favourites file does not help.
I am using Win7 64bits version.
Please advise.

I've just had another look at this and see that MS is opening Favorites from an area under Desktop but OUTSIDE of C: - can anyone advise how to access this as it appears to be hidden on my pc. Thanks in advance.

In windows 7 and Vista, Microsoft added a feature call UAC (user account/access control). if this is turned on, the favorites is directed to a virtual storage area instead of the metastock folder we designed it to used. If you turn off the UAC, metastock will be able to use the regular favorites file

Thanks, but I've already tried that and it doesn't work for me. Is it making a permanent copy in the registry or something? It must be doing something weird, since MS is the only program I have this problem with.

As much of an imbuggerance as UAC is, it provides a "vital" security function in the Vista/Win7 OS so the decision to turn off UAC should not be taken lightly IMHO.
Two alternatives are to always run MS as an Administrator, this can be done by modifying the properties of the shortcut(s) which launch MS. Yes you do get that annoying, "Are you sure..." question whenever you execute the application, but it's a liveable inconvenience. The other choice is bypass UAC for specific applications by NOT installing the application in the Program Files folder (which is protected by UAC, when the root drive of system drive, normally C:\ is not protected by UAC). As an Administrator, you can install MS into C:\ and this SHOULD sort out the problem.

Thanks wabbit - I just tried that and it still doesn't work - I've installed in C:, run as Admin, copied over favorites.dta into that folder under c:\users\..\.\..etc., turned off UAC and prayed towards Mecca but it's still stubbornly showing the same old folders when I click on 'Favorites' in MS. Maybe the MS support guy would know where this apparently invincible file is hiding?

If you have any favourites.dta files anywhere else on your system, then I'd be moving them to a USB stick and removing them from the system, just to prove to myself these are not causing the issue. Even then, I'd also be removing the C:\Metastock\favourites.dta which MS will automagically recreate the next time MS starts. wabbit [:D]

In Windows 7, if you have UAC (User Account Control) turned on, it forces the favorites to look in a virtual store folder. If you turn off UAC, then the favorites will use the file in the MetaStock folder as it was designed to do.

I've tried everything suggested here yet it still stubbornly loads the original favorites folder (I'm using Windows Vista on the laptop in question.) I can only assume it has a copy of favorites.dta hidden in the Registry - could that be the case?

MetaStock only uses favorites from a file named "Favorites.dta" If it is not using the one in the Equis\MetaStock folder, then you must have at least one more stored somewhere on your computer. At this point, all I can suggest is a through search of your system in all drives and folders all copies of favorites.dta
