NYSE TRIN can be accessed through the symbol .STI.N

Additionally, you can create a "Composite" study in XENITH/Eikon and plot within a chart there.

To do this for the NYSE TRIN:

1. Launch XENITH (Start > All Apps > Thomson Reuters > Thomson Reuters Eikon)

2. Click the orange helios in the upper left of the Eikon Toolbar

3. Click the Charting category and click the Chart app

4. Right-click in an empty area of the chart and choose Instrument Explorer

5. Click the File menu and choose New Composite

6. Name the composite (I recommend all caps no spaces, such as NYSETRIN) and click OK

7. Copy/Paste the following formula into the Expression box: ("Q%.AD.N,ISSUES_ADV"/"Q%.AD.N,ISSUES_DEC")/("Q%.AD.N,VOLUME_ADV"/"Q%.AD.N,VOLUME_DEC")

8. Click Apply/Close

To call a composite, you must type the composite name with an = sign before it in the instrument box at the top of the chart window, such as =NYSETRIN then press (Enter). This may come in initially as a bar chart, but you can click where it says Bar OHLC in the upper left corner of the chart and change this to Line instead.

NYSE Tick is available under the symbol: .TIC.N which can be opened directly within MetaStock.

Hello,

I have a related question and don't wish to open a new post.

I'm using metastock end-day, so I don't see an expression box to use in the file->new->composite security.

Furthermore, is it possible to create a TRIN for other indexes? (Energy index for example)

Thank you

Hi,

I have updated the original response which was not entirely correct. You can use .STI.N to plot the NYSE TRIN. This indicator is based on broader market advancing/declining issues/volume. I am not aware of any indexes that track these statistics by particular sectors. There is also a NASDAQ TRIN which uses symbol .STI.OQ. In short, if you can access advancing/declining issues/volume, you should be able to construct an indicator based on this data.

It is possible to simulate a similar process for other stock groups, but there are going to be pretty severe limitations on how to do this using the "Security" function. We do this with our SectorStat indicators available in MetaStock 14. There are limitations on how many Security functions one can use within indicators and there are also performance limitations to calling too many securities via the formula language. We basically took a weighted listing of the stocks in a particular sector and calculated the advancing/declining issues/volumes for those securities.
