I've been a user of windows since forever and metastock from early versions up to 10.1. Now XP seems to be dying and to move to Windows7 or 8 involves reinstalling all my programmes - which is not an option at my advanced age! The latest XP updates so destroyed my internet connectivity that I've had to remove recent updates and cancel the automatic update service. Is there not any enterprising company that could buy-out Win98 from Equis to provide continuing support?

Can anyone suggest a way out?

Grateful for all polite suggestions!

Windows XP is supported until April 2014, at this point updates will stop and it would be sensible to move to a newer operating system. It will continue to work but obviously any vulnerabilities will not be patched.

Vista can be installed over XP as an upgrade, and is supported for a few more years - if you can find it anywhere.

Upgrading straight to Windows 7 is not too painful - I can't comment on 8 as I've avoided it for the moment.. Yes you would need to re-install your software. But it's easy enough to export documents and settings using the "easy transfer" wizard (an external hard drive will be very helpful also). Installing programs is easy as long as you have the installation medium (downloaded files should be transferred from your old installation by the transfer wizard, you'll just need to find your CD's for any others)

As for Windows 98, it's obsolete and doesn't really work with current hardware. It did the job in it's day but it was far more unstable than anything available now and as far as I'm concerned belongs in the past!

You could always downgrade to MetaStock v12 - it runs best on Windows 3.1
