I get error for "Folder does not contain Metastock files".

Recently, there is a HDD issue, so I need to move all apps and swap between HDDs.

C drive is my window and D drive is my app

What I did:

1) copy everything within D drive into E drive, which is a new HDD.

2) remove original D drive from PC, and rename E drive into C drive

3) restore image for C drive using Norton Ghost

4) when I run Metastock, which install on D drive, it works fine, but when I open files, it pops up message "Folder does not contain Metastock files".

I have done many times before, it does not any problem, but this time, I get an error.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what cause the problem and how to solve it?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions

When you try to OPEN a file, browse to the main Metastock folder, then to the folder & files you are looking for.

I can only find Charts, and cannot find any Smart Charts.

Smart Charts should store in D:\DATA\MSSmart\ directory, which contains many files, such as C1, C28 ..., under window explorer, I can see those files existed, but when I open any file within Metastock, I cannot see any Smart Charts at all within MeteStock.

Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks you very much for any suggestions

When you use OPEN, make sure the "Files of Type" at the bottom of the dialog says "SmartCharts". The extension is *.MWS, if you want to search your hard disk.

Yes, I already select "SmartCharts" within Metastock, and search extension *.MWS and confirm the directory is under D:\DATA\MSSmart, and I can see a lot of file C1, C28 ... existed under window explorer, but when I try to open file within Metastock under D:\DATA\MSSmart, I don't see anything under SmartCharts as Files of Types.

Do you have any suggestions?

The data will be in the D:\DATA\ folder. MetaStock knows to look in the ..\MSSmart\ folder.

I would expect the data files to be in D:\DATA2\ and the smart charts in D:\DATA2\MSSmart\. From your image, it looks like the charts are there. Are the data files in the D:\DATA2\ folder? Use Windows Explorer to see exactly what's there -- the data will be in *.DAT files, along with EMASTER.* and MASTER.* files.

Please see following linked image for detailed description.

I see EMASTER file and a list of *.DAT under D:\DATA2 under window explorer and

many Metastock smartcharts under D:\DATA2\MSSmart under window explorer.

but MASTER file is gone.

Do you have any suggestions why I cannot see any smartchart under metastock?

Thanks you very much for any suggestions

Normally, you do NOT see the smart chart -- you see the symbol & name from within MetaStock (the F??.dat files in Windows Explorer), and when you double-click, MetaStock automatically uses the associated SmartChart in the MSSmart folder. Here is what you SHOULD see: UserPostedImage My guess at this point is that something went wrong in your copy process. I suggest you contact Tech Support. Good luck! Post back when you find something out, would you?

The Master file is missing, once I restore this file from backup, it works now.

I would like to know what kind of setting stores on Master and EMaster file,

what kinds of change will affect those files? if I make change on any expert, indicator, or system tester, will it make any change on those files?

Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks you very much for any suggestions

They store the Symbol and Name. Experts, Explorations, Indicators and System Tests are stored separately in the MSxx????.DTA files, in the \Equis\MetaStock\ folder. If you want to back them up separately, use the Indicator Builder's ORGANIZER button to Export them.

MASTER and EMASTER files contain information about the MS data files and are absolutely required by MS, so don't delete or attempt to edit them. The files are not changed (or at least, should not not be changed) by any function within MS itself, but only be changed when information in the MS data is changed, added, deleted etc by a data update or manual editing using the Downloader or similar.

Based on my experience, I only copy the whole directory into different drive for backup instead of using export, it still works fine for Metastock.

I would like to know if the data is updated on 10 Oct, 2012, but the Master file is missing, so I restore Master file from backup on 3 Jan, 2012, how does it effect the data? Referring to my case, I still can see the latest updata data on 10 Oct, 2012 with old Master file.

Do you have any suggetions on what affect on Metastock with old Master file?

Thanks everyone very much for any suggestions

Perform your normal data update, then open the relevant data file in the Downloader to check all the required information is up-to-date. If it is, then simply close the Downloader and get back to work; if the data file is corrupt, either make the necessary changes and save your work, or delete the entire data file and re-download the historical data.
