I'm having trouble 'stepping' through my layouts.
Let's say I have a number of 4-chart layouts open. When I use the ALT+> or the 'Next Security' buttons, instead of seeing the next layout that I have opened, I am seeing a layout - 4 charts and with my indicators overlaid - but of entirely different security!
This has just happened recently - it certainly used to step to the next open layout. What could have changed?
(ps I do have 'Change All charts in layout' checked in Tools > Options >Chart Options)

Thanks Wabbit.
So is the only way to tab though layouts is to have them all as buttons on the Custom Toolbar?
What seems strange to me is that even though my layouts are all in the Charts folder, ALT + > is loading a security from outside the folder, ie from 'Local Data'.
Is that correct?

Is that correct? That's how all charts work -- they keep a "link" to the symbol file (and thus the folder it is in). Otherwise, how would they know what data to use when you re-open them? You may note that using Alt-Arrow is limited in scope to whatever symbols are in the original symbol's folder. This can be useful -- for example, if you use The Downloader to create a sub-folder named ..\INDEX\ and copy over any indices you follow. You can browse JUST those symbols with one chart/layout. The FIRE addon product would be another example; it REQUIRES use of sub-folders. FWIW Dept: *.MWS -- SmartChart. Automatically created & saved for a symbol by MetaStock, based on the default template, DEFAULT.MWL. Kept in a subfolder of the "Local Data" folder where the symbol resides. You can use "Save As" to save as a regular chart (*.MWC). *.MWC -- Regular chart. Can be used to "browse" other symbols in the same folder of the original symbol. Kept in the CHARTS folder by default, but can be moved/kept anywhere. You can use "Save As" to convert to a "SmartChart". *.MWL -- Layout. Usually found in the CHARTS folder, but may be kept anywhere. *.MWT -- Template. Usually found in the CHARTS folder, but may be kept anywhere. If you prefer to organize your chart/layout/template collection, you can manually create subfolders in CHARTS outside of MetaStock with Windows Explorer, using the mouse and/or "Cut & Paste" to move things around. Do NOT do this while MetaStock has the file you are moving open.

Many thanks for that - I have tried saving layouts to the Desktop but that didn't help!
So let me put it another way: Is there a way I can heve a number of layouts open, and be able to step back and forth between them?

The best solution I've seen so far is that custom toolbar button idea -- once the layout files are opened, they won't open again, MS will just switch to that layout.

Thanks, Jonathan. I'm not sure I quite understand the last part...
"once the layout files are opened, they won't open again, MS will just switch to that layout."

The first time you click the button, MS has to open the files which make up the layout. So, say you set up three buttons, each for a different layout. Then, click each button once; each layout will load. Now, just click a button to instantly switch to the assigned layout.
It's as close as you'll get to Ctrl-TAB type window switching.

I see. I guess the downside of this is that the buttons cannot be labelled and if' like me' you have 30 or more layouts, then the Custom tool bar is going to be a little cluttered.
But thanks for your help again Jonathan.
