Lots of posts about connecting to quotes.reutersdatalink.com but I still can't tell where the problem is with my new account.

When I do a telnet test :

telnet quotes.reutersdatalink.com 7983

I get "Connection failed". But my ADSL router allows ALL outbound traffic, and when I added a rule, it clearly showed the outbound request. [ SOURCE IP removed from below.]

Aug 5 16:56:31 kernel: Firewall Log -> IN=br0 OUT=atm1
SRC=[censored][censored]X DST=192.165.218.19 LEN=48 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=127
ID=37998 DF PROTO=TCP SPT=26468 DPT=7983 WINDOW=65535 RES=0x00 SYN
URGP=0

So I know the request leaves the ADSL router. Am I missing something very basic here? And tracert reports locations up to when they're hidden by Reuters.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

This it sounds like something is blocking the port. This could be your router or a firewall.

Does the downloader time out when you try to collect data or does it stop at "Starting Data Retrieval"?

if it is stops at that message, you have an FTP issue. The windows firewall is the most common cause for this.

Thank you. The Downloader just says "Connection to host failed".

I don't use the Windows firewall.

When I do "telnet quotes.reutersdatalink.com" I do see ".Could not open connection to the host, on port 79 83: Connect failed" but I don't think you can distinguish between "connect failed" and "timeout", at least for "telnet" . And I see the outbound message from the ADSL router, so I know it has got through all my security devices. And "telnet" only uses the one port.

I also tried tracert from different Broadband suppliers and it always times out when it gets to "*..edge3.NewYork1.Level3.net" Does anybody have tracert output from a working connection?

The actual Reuters servers are protected and can not be completely reached by a tracert or by pinging them. It does sound like you got as far as a tracert is allowed to go.

If the telnet comes back immediately with the can not connect message then I would contend the port is blocked. If it took several minutes to return that message then a timeout is more likely.

The telnet does not fail immediately but after about 15-20 secs. I even stripped this down to a simple C program that just does a TCP connect(). Exactly the same result. I'm waiting for Reuters to get back to me, to tell me if they're blocking my ISP.

Hello twextra I am having similar problems: Host connection failed ...after timing-out. My problem arose in the last few days after several months of trouble free activity and is intermittent (one day fine then next nothing at all). I have tested extensively and know for sure it is not either my Windows Firewall or AV software... My ISP claim (consistently) also not an issue their end - no ports are ever blocked and seemingly no router issues... I have had no other ISP connection problems until now. Did you ever have your problem resolved ? Was it your ISP ...? Equis keep telling me to go back to my ISP. It's getting embarrassing... Grateful for any pointers...you clearly know a good deal more on this than I do. Thanks

If twextra is who I think he is, his ISP had acquired some new IP addresses at the beginning of August. When he upgraded his service with them, they switched his account to one of the new addresses. This new address was still blocked by the Reuters Datalink servers because they were not suppose to be in use. After our servers were updated, he was able to get his data.

I'm not aware of another IP address release having occurred recently so you should not be having the exact same issue. Try TelNet and then please chat or call our support group so we can help you resolve thsi in a timely manner
