Hi, I seem to have a scaling issue that I can't solve. All of my charts (in existing layouts & opening of new charts) have the scaling option of 'Overlay without scale' selected. I can't seem to change them to any other option ie 'Merge with scale on right'. No matter what I do, the charts keep this same option. This is obviously causing problems with some indicators when I try and attach them. Any ideas as to what my be doing this? Thanks.

Usually, you get a scaling option when you drag a new indicator into a chart, or drag something from one chart or window to another.

Trying clicking an indicator first, make sure it is selected, THEN right click it and see if you get the "scaling" option.

Hi Jonathon, Yes I do get the scaling option whenever I drag an indicator onto a chart or right click on it, but no matter what I select, if I go back and check the scaling (ie right click on it and select 'scaling') it always shows as 'Overlay without scale'? Even if I open a new chart without any indicators on it and right mouse click and select the 'Merge with scale on right' option, it won't stay as that scaling option. It alway reverts to 'Overlay without scale'. I'm wondering if it's a smartchart issue? Cheers, Kym.

A "smart" chart is just a regular chart.that is automatically saved.

Try WINDOW, then NEW WINDOW, use ALT-DEL to remove everything, then re-create the chart. If the scaling works, close the original chart, then save it and change the SAVE AS TYPE to SmartChart, to replace the old one.

I'd be tempted to take a back up of all my indicators and custom codes, deleting all smart charts and reinstalling MS.

Wabbit: Um, worried about Gremlins?

Kym: Wabbit makes a good suggestion -- I back up pretty regular anyway, but if you're not in the habit, it's not a bad time to start! FWIW, I export using the Organizer to a dated folder-name, plus run a regular monthly backup which copies the whole EQUIS folder.

Thanks Johnathan & Wabbit for your suggestions. I do regularly backup. I'll certainly give your suggestions a go. Cheers, Kym.

Hey, let us know how it turns out -- someone else may have the same problem, so we'd like to know how it turns out.

Sometimes a sniper rifle is a good way to pick off one gremlin, but sometimes it's better to "nuke the site from orbit, it's the only way to be sure." wabbit [:D]

Only thing I can think of:
If you have scales on both left hand side and right hand side,
get rid of the left hand side scale, then try the non-scale option.
Also if this is happening during scrolling through stocks make sure you not
confusing charts with smart charts, with templates.

Thanks fellas, much appreciated. To date I've tried the following without luck: Try WINDOW, then NEW WINDOW, use ALT-DEL to remove everything, then re-create ......... and If you have scales on both left hand side and right hand side, get rid of the left hand side scale, then try......... So now going to try deleting smart charts and reinstall MS as per Wabbit's suggestion. One question - how does deleting all my smart charts effect my layouts? Will the layouts keep the same securities in them? I realise all the indicators, EAs etc will be gone. Will certainly let yous know how I go. Cheers, Kym

Deleting a smart chart will not effect any layout, template or regular chart.

Last time I had really weird problems I solved them by deleting and recreating a new
default template.

Hi All, Tried deleting all Smart charts, templates and reinstalled MS, but I still can't set the scale of either the chart or any indicators to change to anything other than 'overlay without scale'. I'm using Metastock V10.1d with Windows 7, not sure if that rings any bells for anyone? Might have to get onto Equis Support. Cheers, Kym

Is this only with one given symbol/security, or all of them?

What happens if you open a different symbol, then drag down one of the built-in indicators into the new chart -- say, a moving average -- then right-click and try to change the scaling to the left-axis?

Also -- by any chance, have you customized the DEFAULT chart template?

Sounds like it's time for Tech Support to chime in...you may need to call or email them.

Hi Johnathan, It's with all securities. Even with new ones that I open. If I drag a MA onto the new chart and try and change the scaling to the left axis, it will still keep the scaling option of 'overlay without scale'. Yes, I have customised the default chart template. But after I reinstalled MS, I used the original default template and didn't seem to make a difference? Yeah, thanks anyway, I'll get onto tech support. Kym

Post back on results, would you?

I have a very vague recollection of a similar problem, but it was quite awhile (and two kids) ago. Dang if I can remember the fix, though. Might've gone away after recreating charts...

By any chance, are you opening files directly from disk, or favorites or online?

No worries Johnathan, will do. I'm opening files from my data providers (Premium Data via Trading Game) folders directly from my hard drive. Cheers, Kym

Just had a thought:

Have you tried applying other templates included w/Metastock, then trying to change the scale of one of the subwindow indicators?
