It will be nice if there is an easier way to backup:
1) Charts, Templates and Layouts
2) Formulas and Explorers
3) Favorites

I copy the files: MSSMART, charts, experts, explorer folders, and the 3 MS11*.DTA
files for my quick backup. You could write a "bat" file that does it automatically. Verify
by doing a search for backup on this forum.
If anyone thinks I am missing a file, please add a comment.
