Is it possible to paste or otherwise insert graphic symbols beyond the basic ones provided in MS EOD. All that seem to be available are basic arrows and a few other symbols on the "symbol pallette"

Don't quote me on this: but I believe the symbols on the symbol palette are the MS fonts that are installed when MS is installed? To change these symbols, you would have to define a new font, but this would have global ramifications inside MS.
If you have the time, BACKUP THE EXISTING FONT FILE FIRST, then try replacing the font files with your own customised font files. If it fails, then simply swap back. There is plenty of info on the web on how to make your own true type fonts.... its a bit fiddly, but not impossible. YOU DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!
