Looking to purchase a laptop JUST FOR ELECTRONIC TRADING. Does anyone out there have any recommendations re: ideal processor/speed, RAM (1GB or more?), even cable vs. DSL, etc.....
Also, do a special "build' from a Dell or Gateway, vs. buying one from a big box and putting up with all the extra garbage they tend to load, that may get in the way of optimum data streaming performance?
If you have had good performance with your setup, I'd love to know your specs! The family desktop has locked up with me too many times when running MS Pro, as well as my broker's real-time trading platform....and I can't seem to reliably run them simultaneously. Am running DSL currently, but suspect I may need to move to a bigger pipeline for maintaining a reliable data stream?
Any opinions here will be greatly appreciate - thanks a million!

hey dawsmit..... most any laptop from dell should work.... if it comes with vista they will bump up the memory for free, vista is a memory hog.... 3 gigs should be way more than needed..... you can still get xp....
if your running many intense programs like meta pro, quotecenter, etrades platforms, metatrader, and so on at the same time, the weak link in laptops will be the power supply.... i go thru 1 every 3 or 4 months....
the debate over cable vs dsl wil never end, but being from that business i can say comfortably, dsl has a slight advantage.... directway or wild blue are too iffy to be considered for full time trading.... dial up is fine but quotecenter works best with higher speeds....
there is nothing that dell puts in that will effect data streaming.... some of the unnecessarys will slow boot up times but those can be removed from the startup programs list or removed entirely..... i usually just delete them ....
walmart is selling the dell demension e521 vista with 1 gig for about 500 bucks.... amd duel core 1.9 ghz.... i bought 2 but added 2 gigs of ram to each, only takes a couple minutes..... it's a perfect all round machine....
my preference is laptops cause they suit my lifestyle.... the freedom of being wireless and unlimited data plans is the ultimate selling point for me.....h

hey dawsmit..... while lookin at pyradius's link something dawned on me.... in my reply above , ' weak link is power supply', that's refering to the laptops battery charger, 'ac adapter' ...... dell has always replaced them free of charge.......h
