Is there any way to attach attributes to the stock list (sector and sub-sectors).. Dividing into folders doesn't seem very efficient or has anyone done this and find that it's not as annoying as it sounds. Or can I download a explorer results list to excel so I can join to a master list? Thanks in advance. Using version 9.0

The URSC toolkit uses a custom MetaStock DLL to look up a security database and match the current chart to it's own GICS Sector and Industry Group.
This is the most efficient way to match symbols to their corresponding Indices. It's also a good way to create non-volatile favourites lists.

hey john... are you talking about here in the states or elsewhere..... meta provides a way to run an exploration on every security in about 3 clicks and return the results along with the securities "gics classed" information.... in other words you can see the securities, sector, industry, and so on , along with whatever results your exploration was designed to return..... you can then sort the returned results so as to group them by those classifications.....
i had written something up on that a good while back and posted the needed info somewhere..... will look it up if you think thats what your after.....h

Thanks for responding, Jose and Hayseed. I am in the States and the Metastock manual hints that it is possible so I will start with Hayseeds suggestion, lets see if I can dig up your docs. Thanks again for your replies.

Hope you don't mind me pumping the two of you for more info:
Hayseed: From searching the site it looks like I would have to create the folders, then put the correct stock symbol in the correct folder. When adding stocks it looks like I would need the sector information first to know where the symbol is. Then in my exploration I would have to select each folder one by one to add all the stocks to the exploration . After running the exploration I would then sort by "location" (really the path of the folder) to rank by sector. Is the process "folder driven" so that sectors have to be split into "sector" etc. for the process to work? Is this is the way it works? Jose: Sounds like your method is "database" driven meaning stocks in different sectors can be in the same folder, and a DLL fetches the required info. Correct? Where does the sector/industry info show up in the explorer results.
Thanks.[:)]

hey john..... yes thats it.... the reason i was wondering if your from here is cause i have the folders already created.... somewhere.....
metastock comes with the stocks already grouped by sector already.... they are in the data cd and also in the downloader's folder.....
to further break down into smaller groups, such as gcis or my personal favorite " icb ", we just create the folders to match their guidelines.....
when running explorations there is an option to include all subfolders, so we would check our main folder and check that option..... then after the exploration is ran , click on location like you mentioned and they will be sorted by gcis or icb classes..... the folder path would spell out the structure such as apaches folder would be
c:\metastock data\entergy\ Oil & Gas Producers\ Exploration & Production
cause thats how icb has it listed.... i'm still lookin for the folders .....h

Hayseed: Sounds like we are getting close.
Where is the option to "check the main folder" and "include all subfolders" you referred to, can not find it. When I run an exploration it prompts me with a "add security" button. Then I use "tools" - "select all" in the "add security" window to select all the stocks in that folder. Your method sounds a lot easier. Using Metastock Professional 9.0

hey john.... look here for the section saying "when exploring a main folder".... if we lightlty tap just to highlight but not open, then click the little arrow beside open and choose open folder contents, it will load every security from every subfolder contained in it...... then run your exploration....
beats the heck outa adding each folder individually.....h
