Metastock 10 doesn't run in VMware or VirtualPC

This is bad news for people who have a Linux or MacOS host and run Windows in a virtual machine. Installation of metastock runs smooth but as soon as you try to execute the program a message with this text appears: "This product will not work in a VMWare environment". Thus, a check is performed if the program runs in a virtual machine and execution is simply disallowed :-(
I believe that the program would run without problems but Equis seems to be afraid of something when it's being executed in a virtual machine. What a strange decision at a time when virtual machines become more and more important - they will hopefully revise it! At least this should be mentioned clearly in the system requirements, but it isn't ...
What do you think about this strategy?

I think I'm happy I decided to stay with version 9.1.

I had to try it on Windoz VMware, I got the same error. That is new to 10, because 9.1 worked well. I couldn't imagine trying it on a Mac, I could never get the CPU under 100% with Virtual PC.
I know Microsoft has said that certain versions of Vista won't run in a virtual envirnment. I see a pattern, must be something to do with the initials MS.....

No this is definitively not a Microsoft thing, but a license restriction of Metastock 10 that isn't mentioned anywhere. Thus, just don't buy Metastock 10 if you're willing to execute it in a virtual machine!!!
I would have been a new user of Metastock and was about to evaluate it. But it doesn't work in my environment ... if somebody knows a way to execute it in VMware, then please tell me ...

The issue is with the license software used since MetaStock 10. It needs access to the drive to write some encrypted files. Most VM ware does not give the access needed.
While it is not supported, we do have users running MetaStock on Macs. They had to install MetaStock through a very specific procedure but it seems to work for them. The procedure is: 1) use Bootcamp and set up a Windows partition 2) boot to the Windows OS through Bootcamp. 3) install MetaStock 4) activate the MetaStock license
At this point, MetaStock will run normally through Bootcamp. If you want to run through parallels, then: 5) reboot to Mac OS 6) start parallels 7) import Bootcamp partition into parallels.
This is the only method by which our Mac customers have been to run MetaStock through parallels. Again, the Mac OS is not supported, we do have customers who can run MetaStock with the above procedure.

In MetaStock version 10 and above Equis started to use a new software licensing system from Nelpeiron called NLS.
Unfortunately that licensing scheme contains code to stop people running software in a VMWare virtual machine. This is what currently blocks the installation of Metastock under VMWare.
This
is an optional feature that can be turned on or off by Equis (in
probably the next version of MetaStock). So it might be worthwhile you
telling Equis your intended usage and asking them to remove such a
limitation.
In the meantime, I have read a forum post from
someone who has got MetaStock to work under VMWare in Linux by providing
a very simple configuration entry in the .vmx file for the virtual
machine. Perhaps such a vmx file also exists in VMWare Fusion? http://thinkninja.com/archives/44
If you have tried the above and it works please report back here.
