Check if the AST Service is installed and automatically running.
This service is provided by the Astsrv.exe file which shall be installed in your \windows\system 32 directory.
To check if AST service is running, go to Control Panel, Admin Tools, Services.
Check if there is a AST Service line in the right panel and if it is automatically initialized.

Are you using version 10.1 for the Vista installation? 10.0 is not compatible with Vista and will have quite a few permission issues such as this.

Hello,
I have also been having lots of ASTLOG????.TXT files in C drive of my computer since I installed MS Pro eSignal version 10.1.
I noticed that one new file is created everytime MetaStock is started.
Can somebody please guide about the purpose of these file. Just too many files have built up in the C drive.
Regards
SMG

Hello SMG,
This issue should be getting resolved in the next build of MetaStock 10.1, but I do not have a release date at this time. You can manually delete all the ASTLOG###.TXT, only the ASTLOG.TXT is non-deletable.
I apologize for the inconvenience caused by this.

Greetings!
I installed MetaStock 10.1 for the first time last night. Since it was late, I did not get much accomplished with the exception of the installation of the software as well as the data disk. I also installed the Big Trends Toolkit.
The next morning, I had a message that my disk space was low (this was installed on a laptop.) Much to my surprise, I had a a few ASTLOG[censored].tct files, one being as large as 26 GIG!
Looking at one of them, a sample of the data is: 1294718 AstService: ReportStatusToSCMgr SERVICE_START_PENDING 1294734 AstService Read/Write request mailslot created 1294734 AstService Service conrol mailslot created 1294734 AstSevice building initial Blessed Process Table (BPT) 1294734 AstSevice initial Blessed Process Table RegCreateKeyEx failed with 0 1294734 AstService: ReportStatusToSCMgr SERVICE_RUNNING 1294734 AstService now running 1294734 AstService Entering ProcessReqMessage for process 4392 1294734 AstService entering DispatchMessage 1294734 AstService Geometry Request 1294734 AstService entering OpenDisk for disk=-1 1294734 AstService processing OpenDisk for disk=0 1294734 AstService OpenDisk for disk=0 exiting with status 0 1294734 AstService CloseDisk 1294734 AstService CloseDisk returning 0 1294734 AstService Geometry Request returning status 0 1294734 AstSevice SendResponse to process 4392 1294734 AstSevice SendResponse to process 4392 exiting with status 0 1294734 AstService Exiting ProcessReqMessage for process 4392 with status=0 1294734 AstService Entering ProcessReqMessage for process 4392 1294734 AstService entering DispatchMessage 1294734 AstService Read Request 1294734 AstService TestKey 1294734 AstService TestKey returning 0 1294734 AstService entering OpenDisk for disk=-1 1294734 AstService processing OpenDisk for disk=0 1294734 AstService OpenDisk for disk=0 exiting with status 0 1294734 AstService entering ReadDiskSector for pos=30720 1294750 AstService ReadDiskSector for pos=30720 returning 0 1294750 AstService CloseDisk 1294750 AstService CloseDisk returning 0 1294750 AstService Read Request returning status 0 1294750 AstSevice SendResponse to process 4392 1294750 AstSevice SendResponse to process 4392 exiting with status 0 1294750 AstService Exiting ProcessReqMessage for process 4392 with status=0 1294750 AstService Entering ProcessReqMessage for process 4392 1294750 AstService entering DispatchMessage 1294750 AstService DiskId Request 1294750 AstService entering GetDiskId for disk=-1 1294750 AstService processing GetDiskId for disk=0 1294750 AstService GetDiskId exiting with 0 1294750 AstService DiskId Request returning status 0 1294750 AstSevice SendResponse to process 4392 1294750 AstSevice SendResponse to process 4392 exiting with status 0 1294750 AstService Exiting ProcessReqMessage for process 4392 with status=0 1294750 AstService Entering ProcessReqMessage for process 4392 1294750 AstService entering DispatchMessage 1294750 AstService DiskId Request 1294750 AstService entering GetDiskId for disk=-1 1294750 AstService processing GetDiskId for disk=0 1294750 AstService GetDiskId exiting with 0 1294750 AstService DiskId Request returning status 0 1294750 AstSevice SendResponse to process 4392 1294750 AstSevice SendResponse to process 4392 exiting with status 0 1294750 AstService Exiting ProcessReqMessage for process 4392 with status=0 1294750 AstService Entering ProcessReqMessage for process 4392 1294750 AstService entering DispatchMessage 1294750 AstService Geometry Request
I deleted all the files as the prior posts indicated, however, when I launch MetaStock, they come back. I will continue to delete these, but I am concerned about the size of these files.
Was this released with some debugging logs enabled? Is there no way to turn them off?
Thanks for your assistance with this.
Paul.

Hi Nickless, your solution doens't work for me.
I have the same "Unable to install Windows Service" problem. I am using XP Sp2. The Astsrv.exe is exists in my \windows\system 32 directory but still it cannot be run.
Under admin tools, services, the astsrv.exe is already under automatic run config but still it cannot run. Trying to start it, the error says "error 3 : the system cannot find the path specified"
Trying to run it by clicking Astsrv.exe file in \windows\system 32 directory also didn't work.
Any patch coming to retify this?

If you double click on the AST Service listing in the Services section of Windows, what does it have listed for the "Path to executable"?

for me, its blanks (nothing under "path to executable"). Maybe thay why it cannot find the patch specified.

We did develop a small application the remove the service. We're not sure what causes the path not to be set when the service gets installed, but typically after removing the service and then launching MetaStock the service gets reinstalled correctly. I will email the file to you with instructions on running the application.

My first suggestion would be to make sure you have the latest version of MetaStock (10.1c) available from our web site.
This should resolve most cases. There will always be exceptions I am sure, and we will have to look at these on a case-by-case basis. Some other possible causes:
-Inadequate permissions on the Windows account
-Not installing on a supported operating system (i.e. trying to install on Windows ME)
-Dependancy services (Such as the Windows Event Log service) are not running
-Path to the executable is not set correctly

Seems like something of an old thread, but thought I'd respond with a solution as I've noticed that others are having similar problems around the 'net.
Occasionally AstSrv.exe is improperly installed, lacking an Executable Path... to fix this we need to manually add the path using the Registry Editor:
1) Start > Run > regedit
2) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > System > CurrentControlSet > Services > astcc
3) With the astcc key expanded, right click in the right pane... Select NEW > String Value
4) Enter ImagePath for the Value Name
5) Enter System32\AstSrv.exe for the Value Data
That's it. You can verify that the path has updated by checking services.msc
MS10 should start without a problem.
Hope this helps someone...
Best.

1067 is a fairly generic Windows Error. On most PC's, you don't really even need the utility I mentioned previously, although I am not too confident that removing/reloading the service will help. In any event, you can perform the following steps to "reload" the AST Service:
-Click Start-->Run-->CMD and press <Enter>
-Type SC DELETE ASTCC and press <Enter> and you should get a succeeded message of some kind. If not, try SC DELETE "AST Service" and press <Enter>
-Launch the License Manager to reinstall the service (Start-->All Programs-->Equis International-->License Manager)
You might be able to get more information from the Windows Event Logs. You can go to Start-->Control Panel (or Start-->Settings-->Control Panel) and open "Administrative Tools" then "Event Viewer" (You may need to Switch to Classic view to see these).
Click onto the System section, and you should see an error related to the last time you tried to start the service. If you double click on this, it may give some additional insight into the problem.

thx for your reply. no luck event log shows a service control manager error 7031, a quick search on the internet suggests it may be a missing file, wrong system setting or corrupt registry file. I'm just searching the net for a program to check and repair registry. I've also reinstalled metastock - no luck any more suggestions would be appreciated.
