Hello everbody,

I am looking for an envelope that would auto-adjust according to (longer term) historic volatility, but sort of smoothed and by far not as volatile as e.g. the Bollinger Bands.
Thanks to Jose - he had posted an "interpretation" of Elder's "Autoenvelopes" on his webpage, but there again, these are not exactly what I'm looking for - actually I had the original ones from the Elderdisk for Tradestation some time ago, but not code visible. Actually, they are much less volatile and much more smoothed than Josés version which is much more similar to Bollinger bands.

I created some with the standard Metastock "Envelope",
but I want to achieve three goals:

a) in general, I want to have an automatic input of long-term vola of the stock/currency to define the percentage shifts of the up and downchannels - when opening dozens of charts, that's a must.

b) is it possible to autoadjust such an automatic input for daily / weekly charts plus the vola input.

c) also, to experiment with other types of input for channel adjustment -maybe with a momentum measure based on ROC or similar ?

Any input highly appreciated!

Actually, I believe two intersecting, stable-smoothed envelopes with strongly different vola/lookback history / percentag shifts is a quite reliable indicator of highly oversold/overbought conditions (contrary to many other channels) - when calibrated correctly.

Thank you in advance,

Ben

That particular indicator code "cheats" - it uses the LastValue() hindsight function to determine final (future) volatility. Note how the indicator's past values change on a chart as new data is added - smooth & pretty, but not very useful for trading. jose '-)

so nobody really has a clue about Elders Autoenvelope and how to make it ? [:)]

it must be sort of a compromise between a percentage mov avrg band and some sort of long-term volatility lookback, but I haven't figured out yet how he does it.

Elder's AutoEnvelope (and all of his other indicators, templates and explorations) is available in the Elder plugin for MetaStock, and this is not a password-locked package so if you buy it you can examine and/or modify the code to your heart's desire. And no, I'm not willing to post this copyrighted code here. His books describe how it works, so you could code it yourself from those sources if you wish.

The best price I found for the plugin is US$199 at his own website elder.com - I think it's a very useful package if you're in agreement with Elder's trading principles and methods. It includes everything he covered in his books and a few new things as well. I've only found one trivial bug (a MACDH bar was colored wrong) that I fixed in 30 seconds.

It's a worthwhile plugin IMHO.
