I want to be able to download every week the new list of the IBD 100 into Metastock.
How would I go about this without subscribing to Investors Business Daily.
In Reuters Datalink can we get the weekly updated IBD 100 List?

Based on information at Investors.com, IBD 100 is a subscriber-only feature. We have no way of taking proprietary lists of stocks to implement in MetaStock. Creating symbol lists is easy if you have access to the securities that belong in the list.
-Open IBD100 in Excel
-Highlight the ticker column
-Click Edit>Copy
-Open Notepad
-Click Edit>Paste
-Click File>Save As
-Type the filename in quotation marks, i.e. "IBD100.SYM" (You need the .SYM extension)
-Save this in C:\Program Files\Equis he DownLoader

Never saw a reference to "*.SYM" files before -- what are they used for?

They are used for creating custom symbol lists. You can create your own lists {groupings} of stocks. I use them for the IBD 100 and others. Just create a text file in \program files\equis hedownloader directory with a .sym extension. Then enter your stock symbols in the file {upper case} one per line. When you go to open a new chart, there will be a new folder when you look in Reuters Data link with all of the stocks you entered in the text file.
The down side is that it only opens charts at reuters {not local}. The good news is that you can use the symbols in the sym files and the downloader to make new symbols in a folder on your hard drive that you can update daily like normal.

Sym files are the way to go. If you created individual stocks to reflect the IBD100, in QC for example, you'd be updating them constantly. Converting an entire list is easy enough and you'll have the historical data too. Here are some more links on this topic: IBD100
