Hi everybody,
I just switched from a local provider to Reuters DataLink (RDL), in order to collect ALL the US stock data. But a worse start couldn't be feared by me.
Ok, I subscribed to RDL service, got a confirmation answer, and then downloaded a NorthAmIRDL.exe auto-execute file. Next I double-click it but didn't obtain any data. I just supposed this file would have created a folder containing all the data symbol, to update in a second time with The Downloader. But any folder was created.
So now I wonder how RDL works. Do I have to download any historical data from some source? where? Basically I imagine this to be to very important task, given that I could update anything with my connection, since any database is available for updating. Hope I have not to create manually each issue (by the way, which name and symbol do I have to give them?)
Lately, I connected to this page https://www.metastock.com/customer/support/download/Symbols.aspx and downloaded Symbol90.exe file for Downloader 9.0, but apparently none changed. Maybe I'm not able to use Downloader properly, but when I go to Tools -> Download Prices, there's any folder to update, so now I'm a bit frustrated.
Any help from you would be very very appreciated.

hey ageitalia ..... the downloader can be confusing at first but quickly becomes a brezze.... the best route for success is to use the historical data cd supplied with meta.... that cd will load all the proper folders with arranged securities into a 'metastock data' folder.... those are the folders you mentioned as missing.... do you have this cd....
if you do not have the cd you'll have to create the folders yourself.... using the update symbol list will not do it.... you can use that list to create the folders..... or you can personalize them..... in any event the first time might be daunting but trust me, you can do it....
holler back if unsure or need help.....h

Well, here I am.
Almost all right, I collected all the data available. Admittedly, it was a rather complicated task. And anyone told me when I subscribed to this service all the steps needed. Fortunately, there exist this forum... :-)
There's just another little problem: it doesn't download Indices and market indicators data. Despite I was an old time user of Downloader (and Metastock), I never used the File -> New -> Security -> Look-up -> option, so when I followed this path after your precious hints, I already found all the names and symbols, grouped under different "Types" and "Groups". I suspect I imported them while executing the NorthAmIRDL.exe file RDL gave me, but unfortunately it looks like indices and mkt indicators symbols are wrong. In fact, when I go to Tools -> Download prices (after having created names and symbols under the proper folder), it shows me a message error "Invalid Symbol" for all the data files. Obviously, the file are present in the folder, but they're empty.
Maybe shoud I use different names and/or symbols? Is there any way to collect them easily? (maybe by importing them)

hey ageitalia..... glad to hear of your success.... you might find yourself using the downloader more now to whittle down those folders or create more specific ones.... to fine tune your downloading so to speak....
i'm not familar with the exe you executed so not sure what it contains.... often both rueters datalink and esignal symbols will be in the same download...
if thats the case in yours, double check to make sure you used the symbols marked ' indices (datalink symbols) ' and not those marked ' indices (signal)' when you created your folders...
the symbols are different and will not cross vendor lines.....
you can keep your downloader symbol data base up todate by checking here every so often for the latest file.... it will not affect your folders you have created, only keep your symbol list current....h
some good lookin www's you got there.....

You will actually receive an Invalid Symbol error if you are not permissioned for the data. The Indices data is a separate add-on package to the Stocks/Futures packages.
