hey sa.... it would likely be difficult .... perhaps if you had a seperate copy of meta on seperate drives it could achieved or differing versions, meta 8 , meta 9 and such..... but even then, it would be a stretch for all but the computer savy.....

some features in meta will create conflicts when having both off/on versions running at the same time in the manner most would want....

i encounter those conflicts when switching between versions or moving to a same version but with a different folder path name , which is in essence another complete program....

of course one solution is just to have a second computer with meta installed on it..... there are drawbacks to even that, which is why i have multiple same version metas with differing names .....h

Hayseed,

What are the Pros and Cons of having "multiple same version metas with differing names"? Can you share with us?

Thanks

sa

hey sa.... you've no doubt heard the saying, 'can't see the forest for the trees'.... the same theory can be applied to the indicator folder....

a couple of the cons would be,

as a convience for us meta remembers certain things, expects others to be in certain places..... also changes record keeping, such as version 9 vs version 9.1....

when we swap same named versions often the indicator dta files are different... so we encounter errors when the formulas are not found... the instruction set for the smart charts are in the 'metastock data' folder but the companion formulas might not be there....

when switching between 9 and 9.1 you will almost invaribly create smart charts that later, when using 9, cannot be viewed....

there are some lesser issues also....

the pros are few..... my first attempt to keep indicators managable was in having differing named meta's after the primary author...... i have a folder named henry that contains a meta 9.... in it are all his indicators, or at least the ones available to me.... another folder is named roy, yet another jose, patrick, wabbit and on ...

keep in mind i was trying to learn formulas.... so to study patricks codes i would open the meta 9 in the patrick folder..... jose might be good in one aspect coding , yet henry might be better in another and roy might be the cats meow on something all together different.... i don't have the time to memorize 2000 formula names and scrolling through the list is a pain...

my next solution to the indicator forest was to have one primary meta with multiple ms90form dta files... so now one meta contains all the authors indicators but in seperate dta's.... to see henry's codes i simply rename the dta 'ms90henry' to ms90form , rename the true ms90form first.... and his indicators will be in the list...... thats more for archive purposes....

for study/learning purposes now days i have virtually every metastock formula found on the web in a searchable html folder.... so if i want to rippoff some of jose's zigzag work, i just type in " jose zigzag" and every formula that he has writtin containing zigzag will be found......h
