mentioned awhile back about the 89 period moving average..... there are alot of excellent free chart sites that have a common weakness..... the lack of flexibility in the value settings of indicators..... for example, clearstation only has about 7 settings for moving averages.... stockcharts , bigcharts and so on have similar setups... some of us have figured out just how those charts are created and by rewriting the url address's we can create charts not intended for the general public, with an unlimted range of indicator values..... once we have the chart as we like, we save that url address in a favorites folder for recall later..... the instruction set for creating the chart is embedded in the url address....
meta has something slightly similar for its favorites except its instruction set is embedded in the smart chart......
lets imagaine that we have only one local data folder..... the dow 30..... in it is 'cat'.... if we open and close 'cat' meta creates a smart chart..... if we again open 'cat' and change the indicators and close, the stored smart chart will change..... each time the smart chart associated with 'cat' in the dow 30 folder changes to match the last viewed version that was closed.....
the 'that was closed ' part is important.... scrolling through folders using the 'next security' function, is not considered closing.... even if we make changes to the charts, if we move on to the next security without x'ing out or file->close the changes will not be saved.....
if we wanted to save the 'cat' as a favorite, all we do is right click, select add to favorites and something gets saved..... and here is where confusion begins..... what gets saved..... only the address to the dow 30 smart chart of 'cat'..... and therein lies the weak link of the chain..... later if we open 'cat' in our dow 30 and make any changes, and close, the favorites version of 'cat' changes also.... by the same token if we open the 'cat' from our favorites and make changes, it will change the smart chart in the dow 30 folder....... they are one and the same..... if we delete our smart charts we poof the favorites also.....
if we want to save a chart independent of the smart chart in the dow 30 folder we must use the file->save as route..... then we can have multiple 'cat' charts each completely seperate and apart..... for instance if we wanted to have 10 'cat' charts each with experts applied along with companion indicators we would 'save as' each with differing names and save in a handy folder...... you can choose any folder from the drop down list in the 'save as' pane or create a new one..... it helps to make the name very descriptive..... these saved charts do not need to be included in the nitely download.... they will read the 'ohlc, vol and oi' data from the dow 30 folder......
my solution was to create favorite folders outside of meta...... one for the diamonds, one for spyders and so on..... in each folder are charts and layouts that have not only indicators and experts but also much thought pre-applied..... so in the heat of the moment my memory, or lack of, is not a factor.... just a couple clicks and its total recall......chance favors the prepared.....h
dang, seem to have missplaced some pictures, if i can find'em will add later....
