Many thanks to all who have contributed to the date problem.
the input("date MMDDYYY",0,12312040,12312005) woirks fine, however it becomes cumbersome when you have to type in month()*1000000 + dayofmonth()*10000 + year() each time.
What is really needed is a function like DATE(variable) that will take the above input and produce the required date.
