You may want to press F1, click on the Index tab and type in Excel and double click on the Excel File Layout help topic. It will give you information on the format the Excel file needs to be in.

You have to make sure that your Excel file is properly formatted prior to conversion. See Quattro/1-2-3 and Excel Source File Layout in the Help files.
