Hello folks,
I have a simple necessity (imho) that seems to need not such a simple answer.
I need to see, daily, how many stocks are above/below a given periods s.m.a.
How can I address the whole panel of stocks given that I use European stock that are not present already in the Symbol Database? (with Meta 8.01 eod)
Any simple way? Because I have followed the suggested steps and have tried to create a Custom Symbol List (is that the only and correct way?) but encountered the following obstacles:
I am not sure if the ASCII list can be created on the Word editor.
Could not save the list with the .SYM extension.
Have no idea how to place the eventually saved .SYM file in the same folder as the symbol database?
Thank you in advance for any help!

I forgot to say that the above is for System Testing purposes (What is the best x-periods m.a.? What is the best nr of stocks above/below m.a. to enter Long and so on...) or for Indicator Building (i.e. drawing a curve sliding up or down a 50% horizontal line).
this needed to be said or an exploration of securities above/below a m.a. can be very easily performed.
Bye again,
F.

hey fiorenzo... that's actually a very easy task the third time....
couple notes here....
Have no idea how to place the eventually saved .SYM file in the same folder as the symbol database? ... the sym file goes in the downloader folder not the symbol database....
I am not sure if the ASCII list can be created on the Word editor. ..... just type it out and save as text.... it needs to look like this or better still this....
Could not save the list with the .SYM extension ...... once you have the list written out just save in this manner..... dow 30.sym ..... you actually do not need a sym file but is far easier with one, esp if many securities are being used....
How can I address the whole panel of stocks given that I use European stock .... you are correct in your thought that a custom list must be created first.....
i have some instuctions on the how to's of sym file creation, will find and post later today.... it's intimadating at first but something that's quickly handled later.....h

Hey Hayseed,
Thank you already for your help and thank you in advance for your "how to" you want to post. Actually I have followed the help section "To create a custom symbol list" step by step, but did not help much.
As you suggested I have saved a file as dow30.sym. Is that it? Or isn't that part of its name and the .txt usual extension is hiddenly kept?
And then how do you actually do the following:
Quote:... the sym file goes in the downloader folder not the symbol database.... ?
Cheers,
F

hey fiorenzo..... they say a man with 1 watch always knows what time it is but a man with 2 never will.... that conundrum can apply to computers also....
can't find what i'm looking for but here is something to get ya started.... once the sym file is in the downloader folder use this route to create the folder to download.... here is another example....
your first attempt at creating sym files might involve a few scrapes, mine did, but in no time you'll be a pro..... still huntin for the other deal.... its far better, just too many places for it to hide....h

YES Hayseed! I have my .SYM extension file correctly on the symbol database. THANK YOU!!!
BUT I get stuck on the "download" section because I have no online vendor among those listed, in the sense that I receive daily e-mails from my data vendor with a downloadable file and that's it, don't know how else it works with you...
Is that a problem now?
Cheers,
F
