Hi, I've been using Metastock v9 and The Downloader v9 for a while now on my win98 machine. I have been downloading data in ascii (or txt) format from my provider, then using The Downloader to convert it into metastock format in my metastock data folder wihtout any problems. However, I've recently upgraded my computer to windows XP and carried accross my metastock data folder and installed a fresh copy of Metastock v9 and The Downloader v9. The problem i am getting is that I can no longer convert the data i download from my provider and merge it with my old metastock data folder. If I convert the data using The Downloader from my provider into a new fresh folder it has no trouble doing this, but it means i don't have all my old data with it. If i convert it into my metastock old folder it doesn't merge. I would like to merge my old metastock data folder and my new data together using The Downloader. I have tried using The Downloader merge tool and have tried every last convert option and they just will not join together. Is there anyway I can get my old data folder to merge with the new data i download from my provider? What am I doing wrong?

hey jimmy.... saw a similar post earlier, thought i had replied by can't find it.... your deal adds a twist that now makes more sense, the 98 to xp part.... there are some quirks to that move that might be interfering..... first, if ya have the time..... what method did you use to 'carry across' the data folders... you have not mentioned opening chart problems, but can you still open a chart from your old folders..... are you seeing the new sub folders that you can download to in the same main folder that you can not download to..... have you tried going into the main data folder and straight out copying the data from a old folder, the entire contents, and then pasting all that into a new blank/empty folder you just created then downloading to it.... if ya don't follow that , holler back and i'll post it much better......h

Jimmy It is also a possibility that when you moved the data files over form the other computer that they were left read only files. Check the properties of the data files and the folder where the data is located to make sure they are not read only. This can happen is you used a cd to move the data from one computer to the other. hey hayseed and DOC, thnx for your fast responses, i used hard drive to hard drive copy to move the data directory to my new computer. i checked the properties of the folder and it is not write protect. I seem to have no trouble opening the chart files in the old directory.

do you mean is the data layout and directory tree structure the same in the old directory as the new directoy. ...hmmm good question, i believe that the new directory creates sub folders a-z. However, in the old data folder i have a-z directories but a have a few others so i do think the directory structure is slightly different. however, when i use The Downloader i can only choose the root data directory of my original data folder (not any of the sub directories) as the final conversion folder when i am trying to convert into that folder. r u saying that the directory structure could be effecting the data conversion and i should copy the data from the old directories and try to migrate them into the corresponding new data folder i have created?

hey jimmy..... yes thats kinda what i'm thinking.... its probably a 98 to xp issue that would be tough to figure or either in the master or emaster type files .... the best way might be just to copy and paste all the contents of your no longer usable folders into ones that you can use.... blank/empty ones..... if you can open charts from your old folders they must not be read only.... meta has difficulty opening read only dta files.... there are several ways to create new folders, often i will just do the right click method as describe above.... esp if creating folders and not using the downloader itself..... i will add some more thoughts to that picture later..... h
