Hi all. Can anyone help with this problem? My datafeed is through EODDATA.I find them pretty good and a lot of it is free. However, none of the downloaded files have any proper names connected to them.Does anyone know of any program or way to get them named other than running through everyone of the thousands available and renaming them manually? All replies much appreciated. All the best Jon

It should be possible to append the security name to the symbol if your vendor can report the name at all. You might need to set up your symbols in a table using Word or Excel or even Access. MS Quotes can do it.. they are free; but if I recall, there is a limit as to the number you can poll over a certain time frame. Another sure way to do it would be to set up a DDE data array that would read the security symbol and return the data (including the security name). Your data provider would have to support DDE. I don't know if it can be done with free data... I haven't tried it.

hey jon.... i signed up with eoddata just to see what you were up against.... it appears to me you just need to create sym files with the name included.... the way most often used to create sym files is by ticker only..... you can almost as easily add the name..... the difficulty lies , as you mentioned, in the apparent need to do them one at a time...... eoddata includes the tickers and names in their symbol lists..... many sites do that... the trick is to strip off the needed info from that page and create a sym file..... the steps might be frightful at first but actually quite easy the second time.... sounds like a good deer stand project for tommorrow.... i'll post the process later....h

Sorry, I misunderstand the question. Change my signature to 'Desperately seeking deer stand!' LOL! I thought you were trying to preserve and convert existing data. I did actually look at the data formats that EODDATA offers, but didn't see any method of choosing a security name. At least not with the free formats: http://www.eoddata.com/DataFormats.aspted, the Paste Options button will appear just below the pasted selection. Select ‘Match destination formatting’ and you should be good to go. Note: column 6 is an indicator column. This would still be tedious if your intent was to copy and past all of the security entries, since EODDATA only shows them one letter at a time. That would require 26 cut and pastes. Is there a screen that will show all the securities at once? I couldn’t find it. Lastly, to convert the symbols with names into MS format, put the security name into ColA and symbol into ColB (for example) and save the appropriate columns in your Excel file using SAVE AS and select *.csv format. The format should be: [code:1:fea8cddec4]<Security name>, <symbol> e.g., Apple Computer, AAPL[/code:1:fea8cddec4] Rename the resulting file to have a *.sym extension and move it into the Downloader folder. When you open the DownLoader the next time, the symbol database should be present with the name as part of the file. UserPostedImage UserPostedImage

Double-dangit @#$^%^$%... as usual the visual demo is much better. I overlooked Hayseed's earlier post which is essentially the same. There are many ways to skin a deer. Thanks H!
