 OMG! That is terrible...
I can tell you why I have been silent today... I dumped a nonfat gingerbread latte into my brand new laptop (had it less than 24 hours). Latte 1 - Laptop 0. Now I am back on my wonky old desktop and happy to have something to type on...
:) M

Aww, Marilyn, that's awful.
In a former life I owned a computer repair shop and saw this all the time. The first thing to do is turn the laptop flat upside down -- forget about the mess, just don't give the coffee or soda enough time to seep into the works. You want it to drain out straight the keyboard, so flip it quick and flat means flat.
The second thing to do is pull the plug and force the laptop off. You can often do this by holding down the power button for four or five seconds. What's more important, a Friday Funny, or the laptop itself? Then pull the battery out.
And the third thing to do is wait. Funny, how traders also find this difficult... After an hour or two of dripping, while still completely upside-down, you can carefully move it somewhere to dry, all the while still inverted. And dry, and dry, and dry. If you can rig a fan or some source of gentle warm air beneath it, all the better. Don't be tempted to use a hair dryer, as it'll melt those little keys.
After two or three days, more if you spilled the whole 12 ounces, and even more if you're in a humid environment, take it to a computer guy and tell him to get to work. If there's important data on the hard drive, tell him to pull it and back that up before applying any power. Depending on how long it took you to flip it over, you might just be charged for a disassembly and cleaning. If the coffee or soda leaked deeper, you might have to replace the keyboard ($80 or so, depending). If it got all the way into the works, let's hope you killed the power before something shorted, because at that point...
althought the data will probably still be intact. (see pulling hard drive before attempting repair).
Hope everything comes out in the wash...

It could have been worse, Marilyn... imagine if it had been a regular latte instead... :|
My solution would be to bring back 70's style plastic membrane keyboards for latte drinkers.

:) You know the worst thing??? It was only a couple of drops! I still had the latte!
It spilled into the little mouse pad and buttons. And the computer just immediately went black and off. The IT guys were sorted of amazed that only that much killed it! I guess it was just the perfect amount in the perfect place :) Crazy, huh???

 It dried out! I have it back... only the mouse buttons are refusing to work so I just can't click with the onboard mouse! I have been told "No coffee on the computer side of the desk" I am going to have to learn to drink right handed. :) Everything on that side of the desk will have to watch out!
