Have MS v9.1 and all of a sudden, when I attempt to open a layout - a window pops up "MSWIN has encountered a problem and Needs to close - Tell Microsoft about this Problem".
I have opened some Smart Charts, but others will not open. For instance Lean Hogs. When I looked in the L folder, Everything was DELETED.
I also notice that it keeps putting these files in the folders.
~MSFL.INX; ~MSFL.LCK; ~MSFL.SEC; ~MSFL.USR
This is what shows up in the EVENT VIEWER;
Faulting application mswin.exe, version 9.1.0.0, faulting module mswin.exe, version 9.1.0.0, fault address 0x0019293e.
Anybody have any suggestions? I am stumped ! ! !
Thanks! hbnmgr

What version of Windows?
Also: When MS is closed, run a search for all ~MSFL.* and delete'em; they're temporary files.

Win XP, Deleted ~MSFL.
Rerun MetaStock, Same Error, and populates that Folder with ~MSFL's again.
What Gives???

They're not the problem, just a side-effect. Otherwise, ya got me! Have you installed any MS addons or other software recently? If so, then either removing them and/or "rewinding" to a System Restore point before then might work. If none-of-the-above work/apply, here are the things you can try (in order): 1. Boot to "Safe Mode", try MS -- see if it works. 2. Disk "Error-Check" (Explorer, Properties, Tools), set & reboot -- watch the screen for anything "bad" to show up. 3. Registry & App check/clean: ccleaner4. Spyware/Virus check (all have free versions -- use all three on QUICK scan first, then FULL) -- Microsoft Security Essentials-- SuperAntiSpyware-- MalwareBytes5. Windows Update 6. Backup MS & re-install it

Safe Mode - No, still encounters problem Disk Error - OK Ran CCleaner MS Essentials Quick Scan - No Problems Previously Ran Win-Update, Java, etc. System will not Restore.
I guess that ONLY leaves - UNINSTALL & ReInstall
Got it working on my Laptop, copied all files, deleted on main sys, and copied over ... No Go, still crashed.
Must be something in the Registry. Will try UnInstall and ReInstall, and Restore upto date files from Laptop.

Uh, on CCleaner, did you run both the CLEANER (Windows & Applications) and REGISTRY clean? Suggest you let MSE run a Full Scan overnight; personally, I'd do at least a Quick Scan with the other two. One other thing you could try is Se[censored]ia, to make sure everything is updated. Also, if System Restore didn't work, may as well delete all the restore points, then set one manually, once everything is working again. FWIW, my backup method is: 1. On both Desktop & Laptop, software is installed to C:\_My Data\Equis, data into a sub-folder of Equis. 2. For backup, copy C:\_My Data to a USB drive. Do a PROPERTIES on both C: and USB to check size, files & folders. 3. Copy from USB to Laptop, also checking properties. (USB is first, so I can use the desktop and not change size and file/folder count. NOTE: I keep USB drives unplugged, so any viral problems don't spread and because System Restore has been known to change files on them! Let us know how the re-install goes...

Uh Oh ... Same problem again and don't know what I did last time to fix it. Everytime I run MetaStock and try to open a file or layout it closes, and places in that folder the "MSFL" files and locks me out. I can run an exploration no problem.
Also find this in the MetaStock.Diagnostics.rpt
Exception code: C0000005 ACCESS_VIOLATION Fault address: 7C9EB234 01:0002A234 F:\WINDOWS\system32\SHELL32.dll
Find this in Event Viewer WinXP
Faulting application mswin.exe, version 9.1.0.0, faulting module mswin.exe, version 9.1.0.0, fault address 0x0019293e.
It was working fine until I Zipped up the Directory to replace files on my laptop to bring it up to date. Next day, I get this problem.
Any idea what's going on ? ? ?

I tried uninstalling MetaStock, uninstalling all MS .NET v1-4, and ReInstalled v1-4. Verified Ok. Re-installed MetaStock, opened sample chart - worked OK Copied previous MetaStock Directory and all charts opened but resized a window and MetaStock CRASHed.
Could it be Bad Data Files? Any ideas appreciated.
