I am doing some research on historical stock charts. I need to see both individual stock charts and the stock index chart (e.g., Dow Jones) togther, with each daily bar totally aligned up vertically. I know how to do it manaully, but I need to go over thousands of individal stocks charts, and each of them I may zoom in and out to see different date ranges (e.g., I may look at stock ABC from 1984-1977, then I need to look at stock XYZ from 1995 to 1996, and I may zoom in on XYZ to show 1990 to 2000 data on the fly).

My question, is there anyway I can set up MetaStock so that anytime I look at any indiviaul stock chart, it will also automatically bring up the index chart with the same time period (e.g., daily, weekly chart), AND the same date ranges (i.e., if the stock shows data from 1990.1.1 to 1991.12.31, the index chart also shows data from 1990.1.1 to 1991.12.31). And when I zoom in and zoom out of look at less or more of the stock data, the index chart is also automatically updated to reflect the date ranges of the individual stock chart? This ability to view stock chart with aligned index chart will help me understand how index moves affect stock moves tremendously.

Thanks in advance for your help!

TC.

Drag the Index to a sub-window of the chart, then "browse" the folder with one chart file (*.MWC).

To set it up, first open a chart in the folder you intend to browse (ie: S&P 500). Then, open a 2nd chart of the Index symbol. Click on the Index, then drag it to either it's own sub-window (drag to the x-axis, see the mouse-pointer change to a rectangle) OR in the same window as the main security -- you can choose to plot on the secondary axis to plot or without an axis.

You can then close the Index chart. Suggest you do a "Save As" of your new chart under a new name, as a regular chart (*.MWC extension), rather than the default "smart chart" (*.MWS).

You will probably want to at the TOOLS -- OPTIONS menu, CHART OPTIONS tab and set CHANGE SECURITY to "Use chart as template".

If you need to browse more than one folder, then save the chart as a Template, open a security in that folder, apply the template and save it under a differently named *.MWC file.

What can I say, thank you, Johnathan! The solution you suggested solves my problem - really appreciated it!
