Does anyone know of a way to rank the values of formulas (i.e. of 25 stocks, highest value = #1, lowest #25 or by dectile 1-99)? I'm trying to evaluate 5 different formulas in Explorer, and I'd like to rank each one in order / comparison to the others, so I can make a composite rank number. I figure someone might have figured out a work around for this. Thanks & good Trading. ....... Tom ........

Hi Tom I'm sure you know that ranking an exploration resullt in order is as easy as clicking the column header. Assigning a ranking by percentage number is not something that can be achieved by an exploration as far as I'm aware. A tool that I developed a while back uses the GlobalVar DLL to create a series of data arrays that represent the 6 (or 12) highest ranking values for the chosen criteria across all bars of up to 6 (or 12) securities. All securities included in the ranking process must have identical dates from start to finish, so the process cannot be used with thinly traded securities. A 6-column exploration needs to be run 6 times (repeat 5 times or batch the original exploration with 5 copies) and each ranking is developed by buiding on the results of the previous column's ranking. To increase the number of ranked securities by another 6 (or 12) securities another exploration (very similar to the first) must be run the required number of times. The method does not assign ranking values to individual securities but by comparing the value of each security against the ranking data arrays or a particular threshold it's possible to work out the relative positioning of individual securities. This ranking method was used to facilitate back-testing of the monthly EFT trading system presented by Harry Ward in the April 2006 issue of MSTT (A System For Trading Sector Funds / ETFs). That system continuously holds the 6 highest EFTs, ranked by ROC. There are a number of obvious disadvantages to the method but it does offer a way to rank a limited number of securites by virtually any parameter that otherwise cannot be performed without a custom built DLL. I should mention that GV data arrays built by this method are lost once MetaStock is closed. Roy www.metastocktips.co.nz

Might be easier to copy the Exploration results to Excel, and do the rank & sort there.

My Thanks for the suggestions, they confirm the fact that there is no easy / reasonable way to performan a ranking function of more than one formula at a time. I appreciate the responses. Unfortunately, this (again) points out the age of MetaStock. I would hope that a true update of this program would address the Performance Tester, Ranking and improved Relative Strength (of multiple securities) charting. Such changes are long over due. If AmiBroker can do it, why can't MetaStock ? (at a fraction of the price)
