I have been using metastock on two computers (Both are using Windows 7 32 bit running MetaStock 7.2 & 11) for a few years now and have got a problem with my original charts I have saved. Since I have moved to a new data source and this has changed the location of the smart chart data. The locations of the data are as follows, old data - C:\Program Files\Equis\MetaStock\AUNZtxt and the new data goes into the Program Data folder.

I thought I had found a way around this by opening the chart and saving as a template, then opening the new smart chart data and applying the template. Then I would finally save the chart but this time have the chart saved but pointing to the new smart chart data.

I started this process and then realised that not all the chart data had been moved across, in most cases only moving about 25% of the information on the chart (such as trend/support lines, writing and Gann angles) and only what was on shown on the screen, no historical information moved over. If you have two charts open and try to copy information from one to the other, it puts all the text in one location on the chart. This is my current issue as I have around 150 charts that I need to convert

Thanks
Sam

Well, 150 some-odd charts with lots of customizing is worth a bit of work...

If you recently switched to the new data source, delete the MSSMART folders in the new folder structure -- they're not working anyway, so you won't lose anything. If in doubt, copy before deleting (or move) it somewhere.

Then copy the 150 old data files & their entire MSSMART folder (smart charts) to the new folder structure.

Try one or two, and see if it works for you.

2nd option: Since a "Smart" chart is the same as regular chart -- except that it's automatically saved -- you could, one at a time, save the SmartChart as a regular chart (*.MWC) first, then save it as a template, then apply the template to the new data, then save as a SmartChart.

thanks for the response jjstein The second option you suggested i had already tried and ran into the same issue where not all the chart information has been transerred. I tested the first option you suggested and it hasnt worked, but i believe this is related to name of the codes between my two data sources e.g. BHP in the old source is displayed as BHP^AU and the new data source is displayed as BHP.AX. I believe that this part of the reason why the charts will not convert

Try this:

1. Write down the symbol for the new security, then Delete it, using either File -- Open
2. Use "The Downloader" -- TOOLS, COPY -- to copy both the old Security AND it's SmartChart to the new folder.
3. If that works, then change the symbol and/or Name for the Security. You MAY need to use the Downloader to change both the Name and Symbol, as you can only change the Symbol in File -- Open.
