MetaStock is not supported on Windows 7 unless you are using MetaStock version 10.1 or later. Please contact Sales and get the upgrade to our current version, MetaStock 11.

I'm not sure what problem you are referring to. I'm not aware of any general data issues. Individual data vendors may have specific accommodations needed for specific exchanges or data types, but those are rarely software issues.

Version 11 has all the features 9 and 10 have in addition to the newest program enhancements.

My MetaStock 9.1 EOD is running perfectly well under Win7 Ultimate 64-bit. I see no need to pay for an upgrade just for Win7.

After installation, make sure you go to the program entry under the Start button and select "Run as Administrator" and "Windows XP Service Pack 3" in Compatibility settings.

I have MS8 and MS9 on a HP mini netbook running Win7-32.... no problems with MSWIN or Downloader (although I use Norgate as my data vendor so don't use the Downloader to actually download data). I don't run as Admin or use any other "tricks".

Ahmad,

Obviously, some of our customers are able to use MetaStock versions prior to 10.1 in Windows 7.

However, as a MetaStock Support Representative, I must repeat that we do not support such configurations. If you are able to get them to work, great. If you are not, please get the upgrade to MetaStock 10.1 or later.

Sorry, I don't use the Downloader; I get data updates via ML Downloader, a third-party program.

Wabbit, I'm using Win7-64U and MS9.1 EOD. Do you have any problems with template stability? I've been having problems lately with Smart Charts not reopening as they were saved - the indicator layouts are all messed up with different Inner Window sizes. Have tried saving my setup as Default Template as well as separate named template configurations without success. In fact, I find clicking on my Default Template button will configure the view to something different than what I'd saved as the default; it's changing my saved templates.

The template error results in a fairly consistent, but unrecognizable template layout - in other words it's usually messed up the same way, but in a way I've never set up or saved. I have set the entire drive and all folders to Read/Write permissions for all user and no restrictions, but it seems like MS9.1 is still confused about saving configurations.

Ideas welcome about this one; thanks.

Nope, I don't have an issues like this but as I said I am running the 32bit OS.

One problem I have with this machine at the moment, which is peculiar, is that I cannot use my mouse to choose from a colour palette (not just limited to MetaStock, it happens for all of my non-Micro$oft applications?) so in MetaStock I cannot set the indicator colours from the properties dialog box but have to use the styling toolbar exclusively.

Have you tried installing your MS9 to an XP Mode virtual machine and used the 32bit emulation there?

Something else to watch out for is the "regular" Windoze updates. I have been caught out several times when they issue what seems to be some innocuous "security" update which complete fries something in the OS which had been working well until the update. They did it when they changed the way junctions were handled in the 32bit OS (not happy), they did it when they changed part of the dll registration process (again, not happy) etc. If you think that something was working at one point, then at some time later it then doesn't work, try rolling back any updates and see which one(s) bork your apps then decide whether or not you can live without those updates.

---------- Updated -----------
I tried installing/running in the WinXP virtual machine available for Win7 Ultimate. Installed fine, but was rocky when accessing data files from the Win7 side (it worked, but slowly) and the installer for my Elder Disk wouldn't run at all.

I need to get back to TA and away from software fiddling, so I threw in the towel and upgraded to MS 11 EOD. So far, so good; my template instability problems seem to be fixed - I just have to reopen and reapply my template to the many garbled Smart Charts from previous attempts.
-------------------------------

Not yet, but I've been thinking about doing exactly that. The problem with rolling back updates to see if one might be the problem is, of course, that there are so damn many of them - if that's the problem it could be any one of hundreds, or some combination of updates. Life's too short to explore all those permutations........

I wouldn't mind upgrading to 11 for Win7 compatibility, but the best deal I can find at the moment is US$199. Considering it's still the same clunky design it's been since Win95, that's a lot of money for a compatibility fix and I don't have any interest in RMO or other extraneous junk they've added.

With two major revision numbers since my 9.1, I would expect significant overhaul of the MS design and engine, instead of remaining stuck in a very old design prison. It irks me no end to run Explorations and then be unable to do anything with the charts until I exit completely out of the Explorer - from what I understand everything still works this way in version 11.

Might be time to fiddle with the virtualization in Win7.

Oh , my god ~~
I just read the above post and felt calm that the Win7 - 64 bits works fine with metastock 9.1 but now I am very depressed again ~~

Then I have to think about thoroughly the upgrade plan .
Is the upgrade price $199 from version 9.1 to 11 ???

Yes, that's what I paid. Well, actually it's supposedly $250 or $300 but they'll give you a "special deal" of $199 plus $16 shipping - I paid a total of $215.

Note that you'll have to run MS as Administrator in Win7 and also check the "Disable desktop composition" option in Properties > Compatibility for the program. MS 11 still has some display issues with Win7 Aero, so this is necessary to disable fancy window graphics when loading MS. If you don't check this option, MS11 will have severe problems saving and restoring chart layouts - it was constantly blowing up my carefully-arranged inner windows and window sizes.

After finally getting that advice from MS tech support (there is nothing in the MS11 package about Win7 peculiarities that I could find) it settled down and works fairly well, although every now and then it'll still mess up a chart display when its reloaded.

The next version of MS had better address Vista/Win7 issues; it's sort of being patched together now with temporary workarounds and doesn't really conform to current Windows standards.
