Dear Listmembers,
I am trying to create a "Chartbook" in XL.
I would like to have a few Metastock charts
dynamicaly linked into XL so when they are
updated, the spreadhsheet will be updated as well.
I have crated a few charts (not smartcharts)
and I do the following:
(i) right click on Metastock Chart > Copy
(ii) right click on XL > Past Special > Paste Link > MetaStock Chart Object
However the chart does not get copied.
How can I fix this ?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Taylor,

I guess the real question to answer your problem would be, "Why would you want to copy the information from one charting package (MetaStock) into another charting package (Excel)?"

Might I recommend that you investigate creating a custom list of the stocks that you want to include in the ChartBook, or a layout in MetaStock. Either of these solution could replace the Excel function.

If you absolutely require to use Excel, then refer to the MS Users Manual for the procedures to establish and maintain OLE connectivity between MetaStock and Excel.

Hope this helps.

Hi Wabbit,

and thanks for the reply.

The reason I want to copy the charts in XL is because I want to create a Chartbook.
In this case "size does matter" and copying these in XL can be at a larger scale
(when printed). Unfortunately I cannot attach a jpeg in order to provide an example.

I used MS Users Manual and did the following:
(i) right click on Metastock Chart > Copy
(ii) right click on XL > Past Special > Paste Link > MetaStock Chart Object
However the chart does not get copied.

Any idea ?
This is VERY important to me, so any kind of help would be highly appreciated

Taylor,

Although I don't understand the importance of this, it is obviously important to you. (Perhaps later we can discuss the printing of charts...)

For the meantime let's see if we can sort out why the OLE between MS and Excel is not working!?

The first thing to check is that the OLE registration process has been achieved when you installed MS.

Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information
Select Software Environment > Software Registration from the left hand menu tree
Check to see that MetaStock Chart and the correct path are listed in the right hand pane.

If all is good here then we need to check elsewhere... if the correct settings are not here then you can either manually register the OLE (which I have forgotten how to achieve for MS, but could find again should I REALLY need to) or simpler, reinstall MS to ensure the proper OLE service is registered with the Operating System.

--

In Excel, after you have selected Paste Special etc, what code appears in the formula window for the destination cell? It should say something along the lines of

=MetaStock.Chart|'C:\etc\MSSmart\C1.MWS'!\EntireChart

Do you get this far?

If so the problem appears to lie with Excel and its instantiation of a linked object. This might require a bit more research to figure out how to fix? In the mean time, more for my amusement than anything else, in Excel, Tools > Options > General and uncheck Ignore Other Applications. It shouldn't make any difference to OLE, but then again it might??

Hope this helps for the mean time. Keep us informed of your progress and maybe someone else might have had similar problems and fixed them somehow?

P.S. I have tried the process described in the MS Users Manual on three different computers with 4 different versions of MS and two different versions of Excel and have no troubles???

... just had another idea....

Can you create an OLE link with any other application?

Start simply, try creating an OLE link with WordPad, then try other MS Office Apps like MS Word or PowerPoint?

Is the problem with the Operating System, MetaStock or somewhere else?

Jim,

Was the problem with the OLE registration?

I am curious to discover the cause so that if it happens again in the future we can have a better idea of what to recommend as corrective action.

Wabbit,

I checked the OLE registration before re-installing Metastock.
I appeared to be fine.
However I could still not make a connection of Metastock & XL.

So I decided to re-installed MS (like you suggested) and it was OK.

I hope this helps
Again, thanks for your suggestions

Dear Sir,

By the way, when I copy the chart data onto Excel, using paste link, the excel cells appears to have a link, however, the result is showing #NAME?, or #N/A.

I use metastock 9.1 and excel 2000 and excel 2010 also showed the same result.

So just wonder if there is anything missing?

Thank you.,
