Problem with loss of folders Metastock 8.1 and Windows 7

I have reinstalled Metastock 8.1 on a new computer - operating program is Windows 7 - I have created a folder called METASTOCKDATACONVERTED WHICH HAS 26 individual folders A to Z.
No problem getting Metastock to convert my data (ASX) to the individual folders and bring up charts on my screen.
I have then done what I usually do and put all stocks into favorites so that I don't have to go to 26 folders all of the time.
PROBLEM is I keep on losing entire folders - so bring up say a stock beginning with T - the entire folder disappears and all stocks beginning with T also disappear from favorites. Happens at random so might use it for few hours before it will happen.
MESSAGE is simply Folder does not contain metastock files.
Some type of compatability issue with Windows 7?
Any help appreciated

MetaStock v8.01 supports 6000 securities per folder. I'd suggest trying to put all of your securities into a single folder.
PS - From memory there was a v8.02 and v8.03 of MetaStock too that fixed certain bugs

Richard - thanks for reply - I have been using Windows XP and Metastock for years without this problem so it does seem related to Windows 7. If however your suggestion solves it I have no need for individual folders.
Re your suggestion I have always been under the impression that the Downloader required 26 folders - so you are saying the same folder I have now (METASTOCKDATACONVERTED ) and don't create the 26 individual folders and the downloader will convert the data into METASTOCKDATACONVERTED without looking for an alphabetical type of conversion?

Alphabetical folders are only required when you exceed the limits of your version of MetaStock's maximum number of securities in a single folder.
Prior to 1997, MetaStock could only handle 256 securities per folder. In 1997, MetaStock v6.5 was introduced that extended the format to handle 2000 securities per folder. In 2002, MetaStock v8 was introduced that further extended the format to 6000 securities per folder.
For example, for US stock data, I have data organised into exchanges (AMEX, NASDAQ, NYSE, NYSE Arca, OTC) but each of them contains less than 6000 per folder. However, their combined total is over 13000 securities so I need to have them into single folder exchanges.

Richard - I just tried it - The Downloader created 26 alphabetical folder within METASTOCKDATACONVERTED even though I deleted them all first so the folder was empty - can I get around this some how?
By coincidence I sent you an email on the week - end asking whether your Nexus date tool could be the problem with Windows 7 so just ignore it as it's not the problem.

You need to untick the traverse folders in the Downloader conversion... (this will stop it creating alphabetical folders).

ok thanks - I have been looking at Source and Destination info and you are correct - it is ticked - I'll try again - give Metastock a run for 24 hours and let you know tomorrow if problem is solved.
thanks for your help

Richard - just to let you know that the one folder idea is still working - no loss of charts - I'll just leave it be for a few more days and then try moving stocks that are trading to the favorites folder and see if everything remains stable.

8.01 was the last of the 8 series and was put out solely (to my knowledge) to fix a CD Verification bug. That said, version 8.01 was never designed to run on Vista or 7. You may be running into issues due to UAC, folder permissions that didn't get set properly during installation, etc, or perhaps something in your data collection is causing ~MSFL.* files, .TMP files to appear in the data folders, indicating that some sort of corruption is happening to the data itself, and the favorites are only indirectly affected.

Encountered similar problem with downloader 11.0..missing smart chart folders and files..otherwise, everything seem to work fine under Windows 7. Quite sure it is some compatibility problem with Windows 7 because the same program worked fine under XP. The funny part is
a) when I use metastock and Win7 File Manager, I can locate the smart chart files and loads properly from the same folder.
b) When I make a new folder and copy/paste all the folder/file to this new folder, downloader can locate them at the beginning.. but after sometime, it reverted back to same condition..
I have turned off the UAC controls, set to run program under XP compactible mode, run as an Adminstrator and set security to full control for all users etc.. nothing seem to work
Wondering if anyone encountered the same problem?
Just to add.. Have dual boot set up with xp and Win 7 and also installed metastock under separate partitions and folders.

No one has any answer? The workaround at the moment is to try to do a copy using tools, then browse to select a folder. This folder will then appear when one open the file menu. Just don't know why the other folders just missing from the file menu.

I run metastock 7.2 with windows 7 and had all the problems described above especially with converting data and running expert filters.Managed to fix the problems by accessing the control panel(in windows 7),there you will find a section labelled compatability issues by following this option thru u will be able to run metastock in win xp sp2 (rest of programs still in win 7) still had issues when converting from downloader icon on desktop but these stopped when started opening metastock program(this then starts win xp) and then clicked the downloader icon from the toolbar,ie not using the desktop icon.... Hope this helps cause it was a very frustrating couple of months when i first got my new laptop.. Good luck Luk26

We only support MetaStock 10.1 or later on Windows 7 and Windows Vista.
Some of our users have been able to run earlier versions of MetaStock on these later versions of windows, but the fact is, these new versions of windows have many security features and settings that the prior versions of MetaStock have no knowledge of or code to work with. I strongly suggest you contact MetaStock Sales to get the upgrade. That should resolve all your currently issues.
