I'm an old SuperCharts user trying out MetaStock. Some functions are similar and some are not. Can someone please help me.

If I save a stock chart it will always save it as a SmartChart with whatever indicators, analysis, etc. is on the chart at the time of saving.

However I have to also save another version of the same stock as a Chart. Now I have two versions of the same stock, i.e. SmartChart and Chart. Then I can open up the Charts with a template and see the same indicator applied to all Charts. I should be able to cycle through these Charts using the arrow keys located at the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

Good in theory, but it doesn't work. It doesn't apply the same template to all the Charts and it doesn't cycle through all the Charts in the folder I selected and opened. What am I doing wrong or is MetaStock incapable of doing this?

Be kind, I'm old

Here is some of what I know about the situation...

The are two aspects in MS for which you have to be aware:

OPENING a chart
CHANGING the open chart

They aren't the same thing!

When you File > Open a chart for which a Smart Chart does not exist and no other template has been specified for use, MS will automatically create a new Smart Chart using the default template BUT use the periodicity of the data as it was downloaded and is stored on the computer. This is regardless of the state of the "Use template periodicity" checkbox in File > Open > Options > Open with Template.

If you File > Open a chart and specifically choose to apply the Default template and have the "Use template periodicity" checked, the chart will open on the template with the required periodicity as can be best determined from the periodicity of the available data.

If you already have a chart open and the "Use template periodicity" checkbox in File > Open > Options > Open with Template is checked (MS remembers this setting and applies globally) then when you CHANGE charts by using the arrows in the bottom right of the screen or by typing the symbol, the chart will be opened on the default template with its periodicity (if the chart doesn't already have a smart chart).

If you are changing charts and the "Use template periodicity" checkbox is unchecked, the chart will be opened using the default template with the data periodicity.

There are some other considerations too, such as Tool > Options > Chart Options > Change Security settings... but I think that is beyond the immediate scope of the problem for now. Have a play with it though and see what it does for you (if you don't already know) and see its interaction with the "Use template periodicity" setting.

Thank you for your help it is appreciated. I think I have opening in Chart mode with templates and opening in SmarCharts down. At least I was able to get it to work.

Now if I have a folder that is called "My Hot List" and I only want to look at the Charts in that foler, then apply a template to them or different templates, and then cycle through just those Charts using the Right Left arrows can it be done? It seems to start out doing it and then hops over to another folder.

Thanks

This should work fine with favorites, as long as you have just smart charts added into favorites, and not a saved chart or layout.
