Hi: I have a chart template that has a weekly chart on the left side and a daily chart on the right. I am trying to save it as the default chart. It used to work in Metastock 9, but I cannot get it to work in v10. The template under its own name is fine ... in other words, when I do an "Apply template" and select the template it shows the correct periodicity. However, if I save that to a Default (File/Save As/Template -> overwrite default.mwt), opening a new chart will show daily on both sides. Saving the template as Default by right clicking and "Save as Default Template" only saves one side. Please advise.

Hi Hayseed: Thanks for the response. However, that is not what I was looking for... Let me explain - I need the dual periodicity to be saved as default. If I open using a template and pick the template file manually, it works fine (2 panes, one as weekly, other as faily). But I can't figure out a way to save a multi period template as default. hayseed wrote:hey aranya..... when you go to open a chart but are using the option to 'open with template', there is an addtional option at the lower part of the box were you choose the template.....it's called 'use templates periodicty'...... make sure it's checked..... sounds like it is not..... once checked it stays checked untill you change it......h

This is one of my major complaints about Metastock. I really like most of the program; by and large it does what I need, however I also want to be able to save multiple views, and to be able to change the symbols underneath and have all the views change as well, while keeping the template information. A friend of mine that uses RealTick says he can enter a symbol once, and immediately pull up a weekly, daily, and intra-day chart all pointing to the same security, with 20 and 40 week MAs on the weekly, 20,50,and 200 MAs on the daily, and other custom MAs on the intraday chart. I'n not sure, but I think Tradestation can also do it.
Metastock needs to be able to do this easily. The closest I've come to is to:
a) pull up a chart (assume daily default periodicity) b) tailor it (or apply template) c) open another copy of the chart d) change it to weekly periodicity and customize (or apply different template) e) File>New>Layout create a layout f) save layout
However, you have to do the SAME STEPS with each symbol. Or, after the layout has been created and saved, then you can open it and type in a new symbol for each chart in the layout, and re-apply templates. What a pain in the [censored]. Yea, Metastock needs to address this issue. I've had this product since version 6 something, and between this problem and the fact that 'reset zoom' does not reset the zoom to the default approx 1 year timeframe, but rather zooms all the way out, is near to causing me to seriously consider another package. Little things I know, but since I'm now using it every day instead of occasionally as I once was, they really get in the way.
Sorry about the rant...

You might consider placing a button on your custom toolbar that will change the template applied to the current chart. Have a peruse of the MS Users Manual to learn more.
Hope this helps.

hey dave..... meta can handle your first paragraph also......
you can reduce those repetetive steps by adding 1 more step to your list..... after step f, save the layout as a template.... now you can open csco, dell or anything with the exact same layout specific indicators and all.... you will be applying the layout in template like form....
and having the template added to your lower tool bar as wabbit mentioned enables apply that 'layout/template' in 1 click to any open chart....
and of course the scroll thru folder button will allow for flippin thru a folder, but also just typing 'ibm' will change all charts in the 'layout/template' at the same time.....
much of the above you of course knew already but was included for those that might not..... the second part of this post also explains more........ h

Thank you both, hayseed and wabbit; both suggestions worked like a charm! I created the layout, saves it as a template, created a button and now can bring up weekly and daily charts with 2 clicks; ALT-Right to next security in one window, then click on the saved layout template. The only thing that's slightly annoying now is that when I close all or exit the program, it goes through every chart I've applied the layout template to asking if I want to save it. Several dozen clicks later I exit the program. But that's preferable to manually setting up both timeframes or every chart...
Now, if the MetaStock developers are listening, maybe they can add to their list of todo's the ability to set a default setting of "never save" on close or exit. I prefer to make my own saves.
Thanks again,
Dave

So basically there is no way to save a multi-timeframe template as a default then. I understand how to create a multi-timeframe template and apply it everytime. But I wanted it as default for any new tickers in my list.
I swear I had that working under v9. I have lost that capability in v10. I don't remember how I did it in v9 though.

Yes you can save the multi-timeframe template as the default and have it applied to all new charts. Remember though, that MS will keep track of what template has been applied to what charts, so you need to delete the MSSmart folders to 'reset' MS so that any charts are opened on the new default template. Do a search through the Forum for MSSmart, although these posts might help: http://forum.equis.com/forums/thread/22427.aspx

Sorry to say it does not work. I read the links. Nothing there that I didn't know. The multiple timeframe is not respected in the default. Somehow, I am unable to explain the problem properly, though reading my first message I don't know how I could word it any differently. Let me try one more time: 1. I can create a multiple timeframe template with a Weekly on one side and a Daily on the other. I can apply it every time after I open a chart and see the 2 different timeframes. This works. 2. I canNOT save this as a default template and get it to work with the dual timeframes. It shows Daily on both sides in the default mode. It should show Weekly on the left side. Therefore this does NOT work. I am going to give up now. wabbit wrote:Yes you can save the multi-timeframe template as the default and have it applied to all new charts.
