In MS 9.1 after many years of use it has now started to pop up the message "unable to open file" evry time I access or select a stock. Press cancel and it completes the action entirely as expected. What file is it unable to open? A log file? data for an undo function? How do I stop this error? Why oh why does it not give the file name? Can anyone help?

Does the problem happen if you open a symbol with a clean template? It's possible there is a secondary security reference in the Smart Chart that is damaged, or has moved locations on the drive, been deleted, etc.

Thanks for your reply Pyradius

The error message appears before I open a specific file. It appears when I click on the open file icon the toolbar or click on File -> Open on the Main Menu or change directories in the Open File dialog or click on the Local Data icon in the OPen File Dialog. Once I get to a specific stock all is well.

I've seen this after saving to a flash drive, then removing it...can't find the drive letter.

Try resetting the registry:
Close MetaStock
Hold down the Ctrl and Shift keys on your keyboard
While holding these keys down, double click on the MetaStock icon, and do not release the
keys until after receiving a message from Windows asking "Are you sure you want to delete you user settings for MetaStock 10".
Release the Keys and click Yes
Enter your name into the following dialog and click OK
MetaStock should launch as it did when you first installed the program.

Could also be that the Compatibility option is set when it shouldn't be...
Right click on the MetaStock icon and select Properties
Select the Compatibility tab
Uncheck the Run the program in compatibility mode for option

I tried resetting the registry.

All went well until I started navigating to the data files. The first click on a directory in the open file dialog brought up the "unable to open file message" then, same as before, a click on the Cancel button clears the error message and moves on to the required directory. Same process for every subsequent step !

Every step is carried out OK but only after the error message appears and then is
cancelled.

That is why I wonder if MS is trying to save a to a log file which it cannot find?

I'm in the process of moving my MS 9.1 to Windows 7 64-bit from WinXP 32-bit and had exactly the same problem you did.

I used Start > Metastock > (right click) Properties > Compatibility then set compatibility to Win XP SP3 and "Run as Administrator"

So far, that seems to have fixed the problem for me; hope this might help someone else.

MetaStock does not save a log file of the folders you look it. It is possible to have it create a log of data collected from an online vendor connection, but that is all.

The "run in compatablity mode" should not be required. However, "Run as administrator" is. Various odd issues have been reported if that setting is not enabled.
