This version of MetaStock is not supported on Vista. Vista no longer supports the .HLP help file format, so we changed our help file format in later versions (I believe 10.0 was the first version we changed this with).

Perhaps the workaround detailed here: http://blog.crowe.co.nz/archive/2007/04/13/719.aspx might work in opening up CHM files in Vista.
You'll find the CHM files somewhere under c:\Program Files\Equis
Cheers, Richard.

Richard,
I have a notebook with Vista Home Premium installed, but I can't locate any .CHM file on both :\Program Files\Equis and :\Program Files\Equis\Metastock. However, I can locate a Help File with name MSWIN.
Well, I did experience difficulty in opening the MS help file. Having installing the following Windows upate file, I can open the help file
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=6ebcfad9-d3f5-4365-8070-334cd175d4bb&displaylang=en&Hash=wxXhFeoaUFLaYnMyx8Z5%2bZ2YjwyLEJqDzX5j0kN7cCcAER7q1A5MFt5Kxel3iBAJaiAtUV%2b1BfKljJmufOYT2g%3d%3d
Pyradius,
Re the Vista compatibility issue, is the .CHM problem (help file) the only issue with older versions of MS when running in Vista platform?
Well, I have installed MS 9.0 Pro in my Vista notebook and have used it successfully in operating on an offline basis for weeks with no issue. Also, I have tested it in reattime basis for a day, it did update the RT data fairly okay. To me, it runs fairly okay in both EOD and RT basis, although it did have crashes.

Sorry I can't help - I have Vista Ultimate 64 bit edition here with Metastock v10.1 and it works well here. My suggestion was basted upon a comment that Vista's help system wasn't compatible with previous versions but unverified here.
I don't think "although it did have crashes" really means it works fine though!
Cheers, Richard.

Sorry about that, it was actually the .HLP format, not .CHM format that changed with Vista. I've edited my original reply just for future reference. Previous MetaStock versions used .HLP. .CHM is actually the new format that is supported (Compiled HTML Help).
More information on .HLP can be found at:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917607
As for previous versions of MetaStock working on Vista, I cannot really vouch for. There are a lot of security-related changes made to the installation of MetaStock, some of which might be resolved by choosing to "Run As Administrator" during installation. There are other issues with the permissions set on our folders as well such as C:\MetaStock Data and C:\Program Files\Equis that might need to be manually changed to work properly, but we cannot support using versions prior to 10.1 on Vista so any technical issues with this would have to be resolved outside of Equis support.

Since Vista does funky things with the Program Files folder, perhap installing to a different folder such as C:\Equis might be a good workaround for some.
Cheers, Richard.
