How many characters can fit into an MS formula? If you read the manual and the help file, it's supposed to be 2500 characters. I tested this theory when I was confronted with a very long piece of code. My MS92 Pro will only allow me to have 2490 characters in a function! Where did the other ten characters go? Maybe it was my counting (it is late after all), so I got Micro$haft Word to do a character count for me. It said 2490 as well. How many characters are in: Code:

Wabbit
The limit is 2499 for all formula windows except in the EST. I forget the number for EST windows but 1099 rings a bell.

OK 2499 then, but I am still only getting 2490 into my formula window?

Wabbit
I took your 2490 characters, copied them to a new empty indicator, and then added another 9 characters before MS refused to accept any additional characters. This was on MS 9.1. I repeated the process on 10.0. The 2499 limit has never varied on any version of MS that I've used so I'm inclined to believe that the problem is local to your machine and not a new fault that Equis have introduced. Sorry I can’t offer any thoughts on where you should look next. Roy

"To err is human; to really foul up, you need a computer!" Anon.
I will test in other MS versions and let you know how I go: But right now I have to go elsewhere!

Wabbit,
I sometimes, well the frequency is rather high, have strange things happened in my computer. This time, I have the same result as Roy, i.e. 2499, with my MS 9.0 Pro.

Well doesn't that just confuse the issue, now I can get 2491 characters in the box! One more than before, but still eight less than everyone else!
I am going to try re-installing the .exe and see if that maekes a difference?
wabbit [:D]
P.S. I had some strange network problems at Uni today too, and, now SWMBO's Dad has phoned saying he has computer troubles (router problems).... strange day? It's not April 01 for a while yet!

Replaced the MSWIN.exe file and 2499 charaters! I guess the question still remains, "What caused the change(s)?"

Not entirely correct - the Expert Commentary formula window can accept 65,536 characters. This can be quite useful.

So if a formula is too long, it could be written in the expert condition window?
Also, I am writing my first expert and it seems that in the commentary section, the formula in the write if command must be a basic formula. Can't have multiple parts of a formula as is allowed in the condition tab of the signals section? I assume that the only way around this is to write a formula in the indicator builder and reference the formula from the write if command. Correct?

Not exactly bulltrudeau. Multiple parts are allowed try the following example:
writeif(a:=mov(c,20,s);b:=mov(c,60,s);a<c and b<c,"the price is under the two moving averages","...it could be under one of them and above the other.... or it could be under both of them...the price, that is {:))}")
Also the part with expert comentary is more that it seems. It is something that could be very useful in some circumstances and not or writing all sorts of uselles and obvious comments about the price movement.

Thanks,
I tried a similar formula and it did not work. I looked at the commentaries of canned experts that I have and did not find any with complex formulas. With your assurance, I looked again at my formula and found that I had a space where it did not belong and that fixed the problem.
