Hi all,
I have MS9.0 and have a few of indicators that I wish to share with a colleague, who has MS7.2. I tried to get the indicator over using the organiser, which yielded a file called MS90FORM.DTA. My colleague then tried to import that file, but is having problems loading the indicators.
I suspect that the reason he is having problems is that the MS90FORM.DTA file was created using MS9.0, and is therefore in V9.0 format (if there is such a thing). Also the MS version number also appears on the file name. Therefore when my colleague tries to import the file, his organiser is looking for a MS72FORM.DTA, which off course does not exist, and therefore he imports nothing.
My question is whether there is a way I can get MS9.0 to export some custom indicators in a format that somebody with MS7.2 can import ? If so, I would appreciate some advice on this matter.
TIA

Its a bit of a bug bear to share information backwards with MS, but it can be done.
One way is to simply open MS9 and cut and paste the indicator/function cods into a text document and give this to your friend. Its long and slow but it works.
A slightly faster way requires you to have a "virtual printer" installed on your computer that will allow you to print to the output to a text file. What output? Open MS9 Indicator builder and select the print button on the right hand side of the indicator builde window. Next you choose the indicators you want to print, one, many, all and choose your print destination as your virtual printer. Choose OK to print, and a popup will ask you the destination for the indicators. Save the file and give this to your friend. S/He can then just cut and paste to "import" the indicators into their version of MS. They still have to cut and paste, so its no easier for them, but it is easier on you.
NOTE: If you choose to print password protected formulas, all you get output is a garbled mess, so save paper and don't bother printing any protected codes.
Both the methods above are guaranteed to work, because they are hand-draulic. The following methods MAY work, but give it a try first before doing all the cut-and-paste work. Just rename the MS90FORM.DTA file MS72FORM.DTA and try to import that!
Hope this helps

Cheers Wabbit, very good advice as always.
I particularly like the method of renaming the MS90FORM.DTA file method, but I just don't want to bugger up his system. Are there any risks involved in just renaming the file ? or it just a case of if there are imcompatibilities then M/S 7.2 just won't import (like cannot read file etc etc)?
I was just hoping that that MS would have a "save as" and then you have the option to save it in whatever version you like, just like all the Miscrsoft products.
TIA

I am not aware of any dangers, except, of course do not overwrite HIS ms72form.dta file with yours; make sure you save the copy of ms72form.dta file in a separate location on his computer (a thumb drive or floppy disc will do fine, if not use the desktop) and then use the Organizer to import the formulas from that location.
Reiterating: DO NOT simply overwrite his formula file with your otherwise HE will lose all of his formulas! Make sure you properly import the formulas using the Organizer.

My experience is that renaming DTA files hasn't worked since it was possible to transfer files between versions 6.5 and 7.0 that way. I've tried a number of times since and have always ended up with results that were corrupt and unusable.

I did a few experiments:
MS72 -> MS6.52 works.
MS92 -> MS72 did not work. The imported formualas were all empty and the indicator names were all numbers (1), (2) etc
MS80 -> MS72 did not work. It produced an error message, "there are no formulas to import" or similar.
MS92 -> MS80 works.
I think to go from MS8+ to MS<8 you will need to cut-and-paste, or more easily after setting a virtual printer is to print to a text file and give this to your friend for him to cut-and-paste the codes himself.
Hope this helps.

Many thanks for your help guys.
I can confirm that the file renaming exercise from V9 to V7.2 did not work.
Unfortunately for me, the indicators concerned were passed on to me from somebody that also had V9, and alas the indicators were password protected, so cut and paste is also not an alternative.
Doesn't look like there is a way out for this, unless I can get hold of the password.....
