I can't find the answer to this question in the manual, although I expect it to be pretty simple.

I have a default template that I want to apply automatically to each and every chart that is opened. At the moment, I open the chart, apply the template and then save as a Smart Chart. It will then reopen as expected but this is very tedious. Is there an automatic way of doing this?

Thanks

John

1. Make that template the default. Either rename it as DEFAULT.MWT or open a chart which used it, then right-click the chart and left-click on "Save as default template."

2. That template will now be used for all NEW Smart Charts. If you don't care about any existing Smart Charts, then just delete them all; look in your Metastock Data directories -- they're in the folders (sub-directories) named "mssmart". If there are any you want to save, do a Save As to a *.mwc file.

Personally, I use a batch file to automate this every so often.

Jonathan

Thanks.

1. I have set the template to the default template but still have to go through the nauseous process of saving that I described in my original post. As you say, it only applies to new Smart Charts.

2. I'm not clear on the affect of deleting all the Smart Charts. What affect will that have on my ability to open charts from my database? Will all the data files still be there?

Thanks

John

If you delete all existing Smart Charts, then any time you open a symbol, the default template will be used. I merely caution you that if you have any Smart Chart you want to keep, save it as a "regular" chart, with the *.MWC extension, before deleting it as a Smart Chart.

All Smart Charts are kept in a sub-folder of the data folder in which the symbol's *.DAT file resides.

If you look at Windows Explorer and find the C:\METASTOCK DATA\ folder, you'll find that each sub-folder, such as BM DATA\, S&P500\, etc also has a same sub-folder of the exact same name, called "MSSmart\". When you click BM DATA\, for example, on the right side will appear a bunch of files with the *.DAT file extension -- those are your data files, the ones you update each day. You will also see a folder named MSSmart -- when you click on that, you'll see a bunch of files with the extension *.MWS, and those are your Smart Charts.

So, if you delete the MSSmart folder, you wipe out all existing Smart Charts for the data in the upper-level folder. MetaStock will re-create the MSSmart folder as/when needed, the next time you open a data file, and the Smart Chart will live there.

Note that templates (*.MWT), regular charts (*.MWC) and layouts (*.MWL) are kept elsewhere, in the C:\EQUIS\METASTOCK\CHARTS\ directory folder. Handy thing to know, for when you backup your system.
