I started using Metastock recently and built the data base from my historical data that is stored in my Excel files. Without forethought I used symbols that are meaningful but do not conform to those of the data vendor. Now that I have signed up eSignal data feed I face the problem that my metastock data have symbols that are different from those of eSignal and do not allow me to download.

I tried to change the symbols in the datasheets but the files cannot retain the correction. I also tried to copy my old data and smart charts into newly created securites with the correct eSignal symbols without success. Seems that I may lose all the charting work which I have done as I have restart all over again by creating the securities with the correct eSignal symbols and redoing my chart work. Before I do it, is there anyone who has a solution?

Thanks for your help.

Kind regards,

Seng

It sounds like you are using local data that was converted from Excel? If so, there is no reason you should not be able to edit the symbol in the Datasheet, unless the security was already open in MetaStock or the folder/file of the data was marked read-only. Can you confirm the folder is not read-only and that you do not have any charts open in MetaStock when trying to change the symbol?

Thanks Pyradius.

I have managed to edit the symbol in the Datasheet after deleting one of two other files which have the same symbol. These two files were copied over from a folder which I used for downloading from eSignal. I thought it would easier and more flexible if all files were kept in Metastock Data folder as I do not need to open another folder for downloading and I can also view all the securities if they were kept in one folder.

Right now my Metastock Data folder has 20 securities. Don't know whether using only one folder for all the files will affect the integrity of my database especially when doing downloading?

If you have only a few symbols to change, I suggest you use The Downloader - then select Tools / Merge function. There is an option to delete old source file, whilst merging old data into new data file. Duplicate data is not overwritten in new file. The new file will have the correct symbol.

If you have lots of symbols, then use the name field to match old Excel files with eSignal name in Excel. You'll get new symbols from eSignal. You can manually sort out any names that differ - perhaps even run a shareware macro to automate repetitive keystrokes. Then use Downloader to convert from Excel format into Metastock format using the eSignal codes.
