dear all :

Does anyone has the code of VIX indicator that mentioned in the January 2006 issue of Active Trader ? There was a test in this issue about this indicator but I just found that it is not built in the MS . According to the magazine , it was called volatility index which reflected the volatility of the at the money S&P 100 index options .

Call anyone tell me more ? Is it only apply to the options it claimed or it is a general indicator that can be used on other things .

thanks .

Hello.

I know as Volatility Index especially one Index.

I do not know the Active Trader Magazine what wrote about it, but i think that is maybe the Same Index.

I want to note that in the Downloader when you try to create a Symbol, when you choose, Indices (Datalink Symbols) with the Group All, the Volatility Index has the Symbol: .VIX .

Now you can find more Informations about it, in the:

http://www.cboe.com/micro/vix/introduction.aspx

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VIX

http://www.investopedia.com/search/results.aspx?q=VIX&submit=Go

Kind Regards,

George Kanellopoulos.

To build a VIX you need far more information than is available in Metastock.

First, you need a security for which options trade against it. And those options need to be liquid.

You need to know the current price of the underlying security/index (eg. S&P 500), the strike prices of options available to be traded against the index and the time-to-expiry of each of the options (in seconds), the most recent price of each of the options, and a complex algorithm to choose particular options to apply the calculation against (so you don't go too-far out of the money where option liquidity is limited).

Such a calculation is near impossible to do in Metastock - you'd be better off looking for a data vendor that provides you with the VIX for that security/index.

Cheers,
Richard.
