I have just bought an upgrade from Metastock 6.52 EOD to Metastock 9.1 Pro for Quote Centre, and want to install it on a new computer. I have to decide whether to go with the 64bit OS or stay with the 32bit OS. I would like to run it on Windows XP Pro X64 edition to take advantage of the Pentium D 840 dual core processor and D955XCS board on the new machine. Has anyone had experience with this, and if so what were the problems and solutions. I'd like to say how good it is to have this forum to refer to, and to thank the people who make it possible. To be honest with you, I have no idea ... I however doubt there will a be any "major" problems. From what I understand there is not much difference between the two os ... If you want I can try to have it tested here for a little while ... Patrick

Dear Patrick, Thanks for the prompt reply. My reading of the microsoft site is that the problem is getting 64bit drivers to install. 32bit software is fine, but the drivers must be written in 64bit. I emailed Equis some time ago about this, before I bought my upgrade, but didn't get a reply. I was also interested if anyone had problems using it after installation as well. I certainly would appreciate if you would install it to see what happens? Thanks again for you assistance. Kind regards Mike Cullen

Drivers issues have nothing to do with metastock though :) ... So I guess the question is do you want to use the 64 bit OS that bad ... Do you have a 64 bit processor to take advantage of the difference anyways? Or are you planning on buying a new PC ... One of my co-worker uses it and he did mention the fact that it was dificult to find specific driver but at the same time if you buy a new computer you would hope that all hardware used in it has a driver for it ... If you plan on installing it on an older computer then I would recommend you not to ... Patrick

mbcullen I had to buy a new dual processor PC for my daily work job, and our IT dept. told me that WinXP-64 shouldn't pose any problem even for the 32 bit applications. WinXP64 has a 32 bit kernel anyway and is able to identify if the application required to be ran is a 32 bit or 64 bit and it will switch to the use of the appropriate Kernel automatically. There are some limitations ,however, but related to corporate versions that are supposed to run on a corporate server (i.e. Norton AntiVirus and other) but their manufacturers started already to migrate and support WinXP64. Again, I am not a PC specialist, I am just posting what the real specialsts told me. I hope it helped. Guara

Patrick I was not aiming at you! Your profession puts you at a better position to give us all a valuable advice regarding operating systems and not only. I don't know if there are issues with HW drivers for WinXP-64, but I assume the whole system and motherboard should come with the appropriate drivers. I do not care much about it as my company IT dept. is configuring every new system before delivery, so this aspect is totally transparent to me. For private system buyers that opt not to buy the 3-4 years tech. warranty package, it could be a total different story. These were my 2c Guara

I have had one experience with someone using Win XP 64-bit edition. MetaStock did in fact have issues running on this version of Windows. I discovered that you can actually run in compatibility mode for Windows XP 32 bit however which seemed to resolve the issue.

Is this going to be resolved in MS10? Or will we still have to run in a compatibility mode?
