From time to time, my Metastock makes new Smart Chart despite that I have one for this particular stock already.
Metastock makes new one, and using Windows Explorer I can open the old one, but Metastock doesn’t see it any more.
What I do, is I make notes and lines on new one, the best copy I can make and using WE I delete one that Metastock doesn’t want to find.
Is there an easy way to repair fit of amnesia?
There are no waves, program wasn’t abnormally terminated, there was no blackout, no other malfunctions, just Metastock doesn’t see that file exists.
Thanks in advance for any help.

What if you open the old one and then save it as itself again ... Does that work?

hey george..... sounds like your very familiar with both windows and meta, so this question is more for my couriosity....
when you use windows to open the smart chart, the prefered chart, is that the exact same folder path as the one meta is using to open the 'unprefered' smart chart or is there a slight path difference....
in other words the path, "C:\\MetaStock Data\\hayseed\\30\\MSSmart\\C21.MWS" is a 'mo' smart chart on my machine.....
but also the path, "C:\\MetaStock Data\\hayseed\\dow3\\MSSmart\\C21.MWS" is a 'mo' smart chart ..... not only are the paths that windows explorer would use are different and also both radically charts.....
again it sounds like you already thought of that, but i was courious.....thanks.....h

Old one was:
C:\\Shares\\Au-asx\\A\\MSSmart\\C100 (was the original one – I made number up)
C:\\Shares\\Au-asx\\A\\MSSmart\\C92 (is the new one – still there)
They are both in the same folder, but have different numbers.
I even deleted new one to see if old one will be found, but new new one was made, so I transferred my manual imput and deleted the old one.
It does not happen too often, but I have no idea what triggers the amnesia.
One day old chart is just not open.
I never saved manually MSSmart yet, I only used Win Explorer to delete unwanted charts as I did not want to delete them all, some have few extra lines, boxes and some text.
Patrick, if I want to save manually do I give full path or just the C92 ?
I could try and see I suppose, but you probably know.

hey george.... patrick probably means to just click 'save', thats how i do it, meta will understand the full path so nothing else needs to be done... once you have the chart up, clicking save should overwrite the smart chart stored in memory....
as a rule the smart chart number should relate to the position in the original folder.... so C:\\Shares\\Au-asx\\A\\MSSmart\\C92.MWS should be the 92'nd security in your "Au-asx" folder..... or at least that's how meta 9, 9.1 works....
i misstook your use of win explorer, thought you were refering to IE, windows internet explorer..... you can use IE to open charts also, but the path has to be exact such as C:\\Shares\\Au-asx\\A\\MSSmart\\C92.MWS should open your smart chart..... not sure why the numbers are changing on you, but computers as you know can do odd things......h

George, you have problem because you delete charts from windows explorer. If you want to delete securities from the folder, just use Downloader for that purpose. Than your smart charts will not be messy.

Tried to see Smart Charts using Downloader, and message says:
This folder does not contain Metastock files.
I know they are there, and I do not want to get rid of any base files.

One of the stocks on my watch lists had name change, 3 letter code (ticker) was unchanged, but Metastock did not bring up my existing Smart Chart it made new one.
Data is displayed properly.
Maybe this will allow to pin point why “Meta - amnesia” happens.
