Would anyone know of a way to export Metastock Explorations to excel format so that further analysis can be made possible. Additionally I would like to import csv files to create "exploration lists" and "favorites" lists Any ideas???? Kind Regards Ebeing

Hi Ebeing, Not sure about the export (I know it can be done though), but the symbol lists for cycling is very simple. Create a text file with the list of symbols (one on each line). Rename the text file to a .sym extension. Put the new file in the Downloader directory (usually C:\\Program Files\\Equis\ he Downloader). Best Larry Carhartt http://www.masterdata4metastock.com

ebeing, I assume you mean to export the results of an exploration to Excel? If so.... when presented with the exploration report, right click on a stock entry and select copy from the shortcut menu. Open Excel and paste the clipboard contents into a blank cell. Hope this helps. wabbit :D P.S. This works for MS9, if it doesnt work for your version, try selecting all the results using the mouse and the shift key, then Ctrl-C to copy the stocks and Ctrl-V to paste the results.

Dear MasterData Thanks for your suggestion. Is your method just for the stock data symbols update? What I want to do is to create from csv files a quick list of "favorites" And quick lists also from csv files for the stock "lists" used in the "explorations". What I have is a fundament analysis program that will create "fundamentally" selected stock lists in csv format. I would like to painlessly import these lists as "favourites" and "exploration lists" for technical analysis. I have been doing this manually selecting the stock individually. I was hoping for an easier/faster/painless way using some sort of importation method. Even using some sort of cut and paste would be better than the current individual one by one process. Probably well beyond Metastock's capability. Regards EBeing.

I assume your csv list has one symbol on each line. If so, you are ready to proceed. If not, do whatever you need to do to get the symbols, one symbol per line (or row). Save the file. Change the file extension on the newly saved file to .sym. Copy it to the Downloader folder as I explained before. In Downloader, click on "File", then "New", then "Security". In the "New Security" dialog window that appears, click on the "Look Up" button. In the "Symbol Database" that appears select the .sym file you just created (it will look like a folder). Your list of symbols will now appear. Click on the "Select all". Click on OK. To the right of folder, type in the path where the data will be saved (make it a new folder if you just want your list of stocks to be run in the Exploration). Make sure Periocity is set to what you want. Click on "OK". Download your data. In MetaStock, open Explorer, browse to your new folder and "Add" it. You should be ready to run your exploration on your list of stocks. This sounds more complicated than it really is. After doing it a few times, it is really pretty straightforward. Good luck. ebeing- Creating custom symbol files is explained in the FAQ which is available for download or online viewing. There is a more thorough format available for importing additional information than using one symbol per line. masterdata- Kill the tag line advertising your web site. It is irrelevant SPAM.

I am an old MetaStock user and wanted to see this procedure you mention for importing symbol lists another way than the one I learned many years ago. I did a search on many terms with no luck (including custom symbol files). Any ideas on where to find the procedure you allude to? MasterDATA PS Thank you Marilyn for easing the sting a bit. I do appreciate it.

:) Yeah, we had to mangle search for a little bit... it was slowing this poor little forum right down. Patrick is working on MetaStock Forum v. 3.0 (this is 2.[censored]). We will get search back up and running there.. In the mean time there are tons of indexed subjects using the links above. The MetaStock FAQ's are here http://forum.equis.com/msfaqs.php I didn't look for the subject mentioned (sorry - not lazy - just super busy)... Let me know if it isn't there and I will sort it out. :) :) and no problems! We are kind of strict but I think it makes this a nicer place... It means you will never be pestered by anyone. Other people that we have censored in the past have found that simply by being helpful and nice they have people coming to their sites and buying product from them because they have the credibility of being here..... You will be fine.. :) welcome. :) M

Sorry for the sting... really. Look this over: [code:1:7b22bc7134]1. Open a new ASCII file in a text editor (e.g. WordPad, Notepad). 2. Type the list of securities to add to the Symbol Database using the following format: <Security name>, <symbol>, <exchange> Example: Microsoft, MSFT, NASD Apple Computer, AAPL, NASD Oracle, ORCL, NASD Iomega, IOM, NYSE There should be no spaces before or after commas. Each individual security must be entered on a separate line in the text editor. The <exchange> and <security name> entries are completely optional. You may also create an ASCII file using the following format: <Symbol> Example: MSFT AAPL ORCL IOM In the example above, the ASCII file contains only one field per line (i.e., the symbol). Since the <security name> is not provided, The DownLoader will attempt to provide a <Security name> from the existing Symbol Database. For example, since the Symbol Database in The DownLoader associates the symbol "MSFT" to the security name "Microsoft," the name "Microsoft" will automatically be used in the <security name> field. However, if The DownLoader does not find a match for the <symbol> in the existing list, the symbol itself will be used in place of the <security name>. 3. Save the ASCII file with the extension ".SYM" (e.g. "COMPUTER.SYM"). Note that when you save the file in Notepad or WordPad, you should choose "All Files" from the Files of type drop list. If you do not, a ".TXT" extension will be added after the file name (e.g. "COMPUTER.SYM.TXT"). If this happens, rename the file in Windows Explorer so the Symbol Database will correctly recognize the file format. 4. Place the ASCII file in the same folder as The DownLoader program. (E.G. "C:\\Program Files\\Equis\ he DownLoader") 5. Open The DownLoader and display the Symbol Database. 6. The name of the newly created Symbol Database file will be displayed in the Type menu of the Symbol Database. [/code:1:7b22bc7134]

Hi Larry, I hope you can help me. I'm looking for free historical data/charts for worldwide stocks for MetaStock on the internet. Do you know where I can get this information?! Thank you very much in advance! Best Regards, Hung

Dear MasterData What I am actually trying to do is: 1. have a simple way of creating/modifying a favorites.dat file from a csv file. and/or 2 create an exploration "list" from a csv file. The "lists" here are the lists one creates in the exploration section of Metastock. I am not sure where these lists are kept and in what type of file? Currently I have to do them individually. I hopefully would like to find a faster/importation method...... The CSV file I want to import into Metastock is from a fundaments search program I am using (Stock DR) and so I would like to import the results of fundamental explorations in the form of a CSV file into either 1 or 2 above. Actually if item 2 was the only method it would not matter as exploration results can be made into favorites anyway (Metastock allows this). Yes these above mentioned files will contain the stock sysmbols but I am not trying to update the Metastock "Symbol list" as such. Thanks for your thoughts... :) Kind Regards EBeing.

Hi Hung, Honestly wish I could, but I don't do much currently with securities outside the United States. That will change in the future. Although this MetaStock forum is certainly one of the best, other forums do exist where a significant number of members are outside the US (if not a majority). I remember numerous discussions regarding the information you want (at least the data, if not the charts). You definitely want to remain and participate in this forum, but you might also try http://groups.yahoo.com/group/equismetastock/ or others. There are numerous MetaStock forums, but I think that one will answer your needs. By the way, http://finance.yahoo.com covers an incredible number of markets both in the US and world wide. Might try them also. Yahoo is always free, but you have to work a bit to get the data into MetaStock. Good luck. Best Larry Carhartt

Hi Ebeing, Assuming your .csv file lists one stock symbol per line (one column and one column only), make a copy and rename it with a .sym file extension. If it is not in this format, you first need to get it in this format or you can just copy the Excel column of symbols to notepad and save it with a .sym file extension. Copy the new .sym file to your "The Downloader" directory (usually C:\\Program Files\\Equis\ he DownLoader) Open "The Explorer" dialog window. Select the Exploration you wish to run by clicking once on it. Then click on the edit button in the right column. In the "Exploration Editor" window that appears, click on the "Securities" button (at the bottom). In the "Select Securities ..." dialog window, click on Add Securites". In the "Add Securites" dialog that appears click on the lowest button in the left hand column (this is usually labeled "eSignal" or "DataLink" depending on your data vendor). You will see a list of available securties you can run the Exploration on. Towards the top of this list you will see your new .sym file. Double click on it to open it Highlight the entire list of your symbols that now appears (usually "Ctrl A") and click on OK The list should now appear in the "Select Securities ... " dialog window and you are ready to run your Exploration on your fundamentally developed list of symbols. Click on "Save". Click on "OK". You should be ready to go. By the way, this is for version 9.0. Can't remember how this works on earlier versions. Might be the same. Good luck. Best Larry Carhartt
