Using Professional 9.1, how do I save an intraday chart's layout for a particular stock if I have applied a new template?
To explain, MS doesn't automatically save the layout as a smart chart if you apply a new template (why, I don't know). On EOD, you have to use the "save as" command and save to the Local Data file. But for an intraday security reference (e.g. us;ibm) there is no local data file to save to. So I'm stuck having to use "apply template" to any chart where I've made a prior template change every time I open. Hoping there's something obviuos I'm missing....

You could save your template as the default. That would work. Or, you could apply whatever template you wanted once the data is loaded. You can still save your template using save as...

As far as I can see, the chart only uses the default template the first time that symbol is opened. After that, it uses the last layout, including any indicator or line study changes, but not any template changes.
So I seem to be stuck with having to go through the "apply template" process wiht every chart I open, unless there are some other ideas out there...

hey 99.... i read your post several times and unless i'm missunderstanding something the process, 9 or 9.1, is the same .....
lets say we open a 60 minute chart of 'csco' and apply my 'center of gravity template'..... now to save that as a layout just click file>save as>, save type as layout, >name it and save.....
it will by default be placed in your 'charts' folder... but you can save it anywhere.... i keep my special ones outside of meta, but that brings about some confusing issues so for most people the 'charts' folder is fine......
and of course you know this but some might not, later to open any layout just click open and choose file type as layout.... all your layouts will be shown...... adding several more addtional time frames, 5, 15, 30 and such to that 60 minute is just as easy...... meta will handle the us; part, we just supply the name.....h

yes but...what I'm wanting to do is to have MS "remember" the last layout used for each chart, EVEN IF that layout was created by a template change. Right now it remembers the last layout if it was created by any changes EXCEPT a template change.
To illustrate, I have one template I use as part of my entry decisions at 3pm. Its based on a intraday chart using a daily period (i.e. I'm approximating where the close is going to be). That template doesn't work (lots of error messages) if I want to look at a 15 minute chart (or anything less than a day) so I'll use edit/delete all to look at the shorter time frame. But if then apply template to get me back to where I started, MS won't remember that next time I open the chart. Not a disaster. Just time-wasting.

hey 99.... i see now what you were refering to..... we have differing definitions and uses for templates/layouts....
a layout to me contains 5 or more time frames along with several charts running unseen underneath those.... the 15 minute may or may not have the same indicators or expert advisors as the 30, which might differ still from the 60 or they could all contain the same ..... as you say, what works on the 60 might not work on the 5......
in some cases the top charts might be of the same time frames but with different line studies but almost always will be the 15, 30 and 60 running behind those....
i condition charts and then save that collection as a layout.... those are sometimes simple and sometimes not but always with the thought of saving time.... as you mentioned , redundant tasks are a pain......h

I solved the problem - If I change the settings in Tools/Options/Chart Options to "Use chart as template", I can go through a series of charts and they will use the same format as the first chart, whatever they had previously. I just have to remember to turn it back to "Use Smart Charts" when I go onto something else.
yes, I confess I used the word "layout" incorrectly - maybe something like chart "settings" would have conveyed the concept better. Ah well.
Thanks everyone for your ideas
