Hi, Im trying to convert about 100 excel files to metastock. Ive got as far as clicking convert, entering all source files, and destination folder, when I click ok, the box apears asking to enter ticker symbol which if I did for every file would take a while, so I hold down the enter button and wait for it to complete. All converts fine, is there a way of not having to hold down the enter button. Ive tried whats in the book, ie entering *.xls in the source file, and this doesnt work. Any suggestions.
Regards Robert

Thanks Wabbit, Ive tryed this software but it doesnt work with excel files, unless I save them as text, then I get errors because of what Im doing within the files. Does this meen that the downloader wont do what Im looking for. Ive have though of a way around it, and that is to use a macro tool to record keystrokes and use that to press the enter key.

You should be able to save the whole workbook as csv (text). Perhaps there is something we could be doing in Excel to solve this problem, so that the conversion software works correctly?
What are you doing with the Excel files? Where are the errors being generated?
wabbit :D
P.S. I am very curious about this one!

hI Wabbit
Ok what Im doing uses vba in excel. Normally I could open my data source file (mines from sharescope), work on the file and save as csv file and all would be ok. But because I want to use vba, to work on alot of files, vba will not save the dates in correct format for csv. Apparently its something to do with dates are calculated, and Ive asked on alot of excel forumns and it gets to complicated for the simple task I want to do. If I save it as a excel file using vba I dont have this isue. When I use the meta2ascii, what happens is it says conversion succesful, but infact it has only imported dates but no data. The other thing is my data will be over several folders so I dont think this is an option with meta2ascii, were as downloader can traverse folders. The downloader will convert the data no problem, as long as I hold down the enter key to bypass having to enter ticker. Im going to keep pursuing the downloader because im sure I had an issue like this before. Actually Ill have to look at how I set my data folders up originally, as I dont use a symbol list.

Wabbit, Sorry just looked at how I set my orinal files up. I export my files from sharescope as meta files, .prn extension. then convert using ascii text choose destination folder, click ok and away it goes, doesnt ask for ticker symbols, uses the file names automatically. Ill have to find away of saving as a text file in excel.

You know that feeling you get when youve cracked something (I dont meen your dinner plate), youre momment oh ureeker, and at the same time you realize you should take yourself to the garden and slap yourself with a wet fish. Well thats were I am now, and when I tell what I was doing wrong you to will want to slap me with a piece of.. that s enough of that anyway. When I imported my files into Excel you get the box apear asking you to set up the layout, ie date format, wether its tab or coma, which columns and if date or text etc. For some reason Id decided to import from column 2 onwards. This left out the ticker column. My mistake was I had convinced myself that when downloader converts, it takes the ticker from the file name, WRONG!!. As you probably know it takes it from within the file. I should have ralised this when it kept asking for a ticker name for each file, as when I set up my folders this never happened, and it is basically the same data. Anyway fixed it, wrote vba code to trim my data and rename my symbols, now working on putting them into the correct folders.

P.S. Did Mohammed's file conversion software work/help/hinder/other? Perhaps you could write a quick spray, letting other forum members how to use it, tricks, traps etc?

Sorted with the downloader in metastock. The conversion utility was good, but I only used the demo, so only did one file at a time.

Having another problem now. Having cracked the converting side of things, Im trying to find a way of easily putting them into there correct folder. All my excel files are in individual folders. So say I have share symbol aal. In excel folder named aal will be aal1,aal2,aal3,aal4,aal5 etc. I have lots of folders each named after a different symbol each containing data of same symbol running from 1 upwaeds. When converting I traverse source folders, Ideally I want the data in each folder converted to metastock into the same named folder. Downloader, though takes the data and put it automatically into A, B, C etc folders. Iknow I can manually add these to the correct folder, is there a way to do it automatically. Maybe convert the data inplace and not move to another folder. I do make my life difficult.
Regards Robert
