Is it true that Equis (Reuters) removed the data conversion utility from
Metastock 12? If it did, it removed a great deal of versatility from
its "toolbox" and gives the user no reason to upgrade the software.

Hi.
MS12 accesses data via live online connections only. Local data access is no longer supported. 30% of our support calls have to do with managing local data. And for years, the number one frustration folks have had with MetaStock is dealing with downloading/managing/converting data. Switching to online only access for MetaStock is a huge win for many customers. The obvious downside to this is that folks like yourself are unable to use non-Reuters data. We may look to add some form of local data/conversion access back in. But I can't make any promises.

Thank you for your prompt response. I do believe
that the omission of a data converter was a strategic mistake
by Equis. I understand that Equis would want its Metastock
users to buy data from Reuters, but the omission diminishes the
concept of a technical analysis "toolbox."

Metastock 11 is my main toolbox and I've written a number of formulas
for it. I'll continue to use it and recommend it. I'm still not convinced that
Metastock-12 is an improvement.

How fast are scans if thousands of securities are back tested with years of data? I can’t imagine that this goes with the speed one had with locally stored data – even with a very fast internet connection...

The actual scan itself will indeed be slower. However if you compare the total time to download and scan, it will be as fast or faster with 12.0. This is especially true with intraday data.

I understand the dilemma, maybe a survey might help, if data source usage is not yet available. But both data source options (local and cloud) are a must. Local data is especially important for MS plugins developers, strategy testing at user level, etc. And, the cloud option is not yet 100% reliable, and definetly cannot accommodate sophisticated algorithms, which are heavily used by MS. Maybe some improvements to the local data management module will reduce the help desk calls. Again, after so many years, such an abrupt termination of this functionality will create serious disruptions, user feedback is obviously required in guiding product development. Many options can be explored in order to overcome this challenge, and I'm sure the user community will contribute with innovative ideas and suggestions ...

My investment needs include the requirement to monitor UK Pension Funds and other funds available to my SIPP (UK – Self-Invested Personal Pension). I obtain the data from TrustNet or download it directly from the pension provider.

Using MS Excel I am able to download daily prices and with the Downloader update MS data files. I analyse performance and I take this obsession to fanatical levels by converting the analysis reports back to ASCII.txt/Excel and importing to my database where I can produce daily reports. This is a daily process and funds are changed according to performance criteria.

I need the ability to convert to MetaStock file format, analyse data and produce more comprehensive reports than are currently available from the Downloader. Fortunately I can still use the facilities of the previous out of date version but it seems I have to close MS12 to gain access if on the same computer.

I do see some things I like in MS12 but I urge you to reconsider provision for local data or expand your service in other ways to enable me and many other subscribers to more easily monitor their data.

We are considering allowing some type of access to external data files with 12.0. However I can't make any promises at this point. Thanks for the feedback.
