I wish to back up my layouts, templates etc to an external drive. In MetaStock they all appear in the 'Charts' folder', but when I navigate: My Computer > Program Files (x86) > Equis > Metastock > Charts, the Charts folder only contains the templates and layouts that came with the program. I cannot find the ones I created myself! Can anyone help please?

There are two kinds of Charts -- "SmartCharts", *.MWS, which are saved automatically and stored in a sub-folder where the datafile is (\Metastock Data\), and *.MWC, which you must save manually, usually with a "Save As", and are usually in the Charts folder. If you haven't been deliberately hitting the "Save" command, it may be that all your work has been saved as SmartCharts.

If you're having trouble finding stuff, try the "Everything" utility. I couldn't live without it.

That said, if you want to do a simple, effective backup, just copy the whole "Equis" folder -- it's less than a gig -- to a thumb drive. The \Metastock data\ folder is about three times that size, so both would fit on an 8 gig drive with room to grow.

FWIW, I copy both on a regular basis to my laptop, which serves as a backup machine.

Thanks, Jonathan. I have since discovered that under Vista and Windows 7, the charts and layouts etc that you 'Save As' seem to go into a location away from the Program Files directory. You can view the files by navigating to the 'Charts' folder as normal, and then clicking 'Compatibility files'. Apparently the idea is that user-created files should not be stored within the Program Files directory. Tim

That's interesting -- will keep in mind for the future.

I'm still on XP, but have installed into my main folder, "_My Data", for ease of backup. Wonder what would happen under that arrangement?
