Having restructured the data folders in Metastock Data - for example from FTSE, Dow, Nasdaq etc to UK, US and Indices, how on earth does one point charts (mwc extension) to the data in the new folders which is exactly the same as that in the old folders, but distributed differently. It was copied across with the downloader.

Cheers.

Graham.

Equis doesn't provide any method to modify MWC files (indeed a change of path wreaks havoc on favourites and layouts too).

If you're adventurous, you could use a Hex Editor (a utility that allows you to modify binary files, and displays the ASCII equivalent next to it). There's plenty of freeware hex editors available.

You should be able to locate the path information inside the MWC file and change it to the new location. Also, typically most strings are null (00) padded once you get to the end of your path.

Of course, keep a backup of your MWC files first!

Richard.

Graham,

While you were copying/moving your data from one path to another, you should have selected the CHECK BOX for 'Copy Smart Chart'. That would have done what you want in a reliable manner.

I am not sure how you proceed once you have done without selecting that check box. Please check if you have some backup or System Restore in XP is helpful to you at your stage.

Take necessary precautions before fiddling with data.

Regards

SMG

Ta for the suggestions. The hex editor sounds interesting, - I had tried opening the charts in notepad and tried changing all the mentions of the old path to the new - didn't work:-( I'm absolutely not a programmer.

However, i've found a workaround that seems to work.. Rejig data paths as you want them. Open a saved chart using the original data folder as the source, save it as a template. Close it down. Open the same chart as a smartchart from the new data folder, applying the template you've just saved as you open it. Save it as a chart. Delete the template if you don't need it again. Hey Presto, transferred chart. When you've finished delete the old data folders.

Bit naff really that you can't do basics like this and permanently add / remove fib retracements for such a leading program.

Cheers.

Graham.
